2011 rubicon run and carnage report + pics & vids

just like the title says, run and carnage report + pics & vids. post'm if you got'm
first of all the traffic on the trail wasn't bad at all, we kept a good pace the whole time. we did have a long wait towards the end of big sluice where a buggy needed some welding done to get him through so we could pass. caddilac hill we had some stops but it was about the same as last year.
the DEEP water crossings on the Tahoe side

camping was awsome, cjcraig7 on JKOwners and polyperformance hosted a tri tip dinner and a open bar at his lodge on the first night
buck island was nice too as we just kicked it all day the second day plus some of the guys got some fishing in
lots of fun besides the fact i didn't sleep very well.

MY CARNAGE!!!!!!
i broke my passenger side u joint on my axle right at the start of the trail on a little side obsticle, Frylock had a spare and we got it replaced.
i also tore a whole in my passenger side front tire but it had a small leak so i just kept running it until right before buck island i rubbed a rock and lost all the air out of it and the tire came off the outer bead. we were camping at buck island so i just aired it back up and drove it to our camping spot and put 3 plugs in it. the plugs held up until the last part of big sluice where a rock pulled the plugs out and i had to plug it again. changed the tire while we aired up.

Looked like a great time. I saw some pics on Rebecca's Facebook page. Damm I wish I could have gone. Im need to get a smaller rig.

That was a great run for us, weather was perfect, everyone was having a good time, and the scenery up there cannot be beat.

I scratched a bit of paint but nothing else, Rebecca did some great driving on Friday and put the jeep through some really tough obstacles.

We will pull a few pics and post them in a bit.

Trip was a blast! lots of wheeling with a different challenge at every corner. My rear locker started to act up maybe 1/3 of the way through but other then that the damage to my rig was minimal. Weather couldnt of been any more pleasant and scenery was better then I expected.

Great fun, hope to do it again next year.

it was a blast only damage was a bent tie rod and skid plate. thank you very mutch chris,larry and mat for the spoting i have all finders wife thanks you to . cant wait for next year

My Damage:

1) Broke a hydro assist line while climbing Soup Bowl. I have some cool video of it blowing on video that Larry took. We had to plug up the system, remove the ram, and go back to regular steering (which sucks balls with 40" tires). Thanks Matt for getting oily helping me deal with that. So I ran 1/3 of the trail without hydro. At camp, Poly Performance came through in a big way and gave me one of their spare hydraulic lines.

2) My tires were in very bad shape when I started the run, but now they are pretty much trashed. 2 sidewall punctures deep enough to cause slow leaks. When my tires would bleed down to under 5 PSI, the rest of the air would just burp out. but it was a minor inconvenience and I never lost an inner bead.

3) My frame-side trackbar bushings took a crap on the trail. They got so mangled that one actually fell out. This was very bad since I did not trailer my Jeep to Tahoe. We tightened the crap out of that bolt and I decided to try to drive on it. Steering was a little flightier than normal, but not dangerous. Just before the town of Turlock, at about 10:00 pm, what was left of the remaining bushing turned to mush and I went into death wobble doing 75mph on the 99. Everyone racked their brains for a couple hours trying to find something to use, but unfortunately we could not and any place that would have bushings was closed. So, I sent the group on their way back to Bako and drove my Jeep to a nearby hotel and grabbed a hot shower and a soft bed, planning to get a bushing in the morning when all the stores open. There were 4 auto parts stores and two suspension shops in Turlock that I visited looking for a bushing and nobody had anything like it. Everyone said they could have one in 24 hours. Soooo, in the proud Jeeping tradition, I decided to make one out of what was available. At a big Kragen store, I found some PCV valve grommets that would press into the track bar end. I had to file out the center hole a little bigger to fit the metl sleave in and press the whole thing in with a c-clamp, BUT IT WORKED. Drove 3 hours home on those grommets with no issues!!!


This is after the outer bushing fell out and the inner one turned to mush;

I'm heading up tomorrow, how were the Mosquitos? I have my 100% DEET ready to go. Secondly, was it cold at night? Trying to eliminate or add supplies. Thanks for the input.

Bugs were not bad at all. I never needed that nasty 100% stuff and was able to keep them away with the 40% stuff. Nights were pretty cool.... upper 40s it seemed.

yep, nights were cold. bugs were only really bad if you had to sit in a stagnant puddle waiting on rigs in front of you, and of course fishing in the evening always requires 100% DEET.
