Freeway ridge Night run, 9/5/10 - "Tippy's revenge"

So....... an XJ overheats and we wait forever :lol3: Just kidding (mostly) :lol3:

For the "Tippy's Revenge" run we had a good turnout and mix of rigs. Cjs, Yjs, Tjs, JKs, XJ, Suburban, bobbed Ford truck and many members old & new.

Gatekeeper took a while for the unlocked rigs to get through on this night, but with some careful spotting, no winching or pulling was required. The Suburban occupied by Henry and the notorious beck*a*poo made it through after a few attempts to skirt the rocks on the left. Then there was the crazy driver in the jeep that got up on two wheels after getting crazy with the clutch and skinny pedal and nearly rolled off the side (wont mention any names) :dig: This guy had his hat in the air yelling "YEE HAAA" as the jeep surged toward the night sky and impending doom  .

The first rig broke down at about 9:00pm with a broken steering shaft. We had to leave it on the trail and do a recovery the next day. Then Henry's Suburban stopped moving and began emitting the sweet aroma of cooking trans fluid (or lack thereof). We got the sub going enough to struggle through the rest of the trail with some help. Broken axle hill was a bit forgiving on this run except for the need to yank the limping suburban through it. Ol' tippy got a little tippy a couple times in the ruts, but held it together and got his revenge.

Desert dog had fun playing on the side obstacles. But his luck ran out when his back tire came off a boulder and into a 5' deep rut. With one loud BANG, the reclining mechanisms on both of his brand new Corbeau seats broke and Mr and Mrs DD were laying flat on their backs enjoying the multitude of stars clearly visible on that night. We had to stuff jackets and gear behind the seats to prop them up so we could sit upright. I'm taking the seats back and getting Mastercrafts. Corbeau seats are flat-out dangerous and will never be in another vehicle of mine :furious: .

Piston hill was easy for all but the limping Suburban. Henry ended up going up piston hill in reverse (at night) .

We got done at the air-up spot at around 3:00am.

I took lots of video, but found that my camera does not do good night video. I will put together some vid tonight with what I am able to salvage. Probably 90% is unviewable.

Good run peeps, and I'm glad that Ol' Tippy got his mojo back :bleh:

Nice report Chris, but in my defence, I did make it to the trail head, I did make it through the whole run and i didn't get warm the rest of the night/morning!! :yup: I thought it was a pretty good run, and maybe we should plan these night runs alot sooner in the summer and more often, I am really looking forward to the rainy and snow season

actually mine really didn't overheat. there was a hole in my return line to my overflow so it just never made it to the over flow :thefinger:

The one that has the most luck is running a 190 thermostat in a 91-01 configuration. That old overflow bottle is very prone to weather cracks. It's all about keeping it full and sealed after that. I have the most trouble keeping my trans cool enough.
