APRIL 16-17 Mottino and Bullfrog
Here it is... the who, what, when, where, why, how, and of course…. the ever important diatribe.
Before I get to any of it…. Pictures and videos are attached and you can see them down there
Who:
Tilly (apeshit) + Mark (bobbed burb)
Randy (rando30) + Jake
Brad (abendx)
What:
Infection of the area surrounding The Hammers.
When:
April 16th and 17th
Where:
Mottino Wash.
Bullfrog.
Why:
Because we like to break shit.
How:
Two heeps and a short bed, big blocked monster on 44s.
And to the meat...
So, I posted up a week or two ago for some action. Randy and I had been talking about this for a while and I know I had posted several times on the board for the last several months that I was putting something together for this in March.
Well, shit happened and it rolled into April. No problem…. made for better weather. Speaking of the weather… it was amazing. I would guess in the mid to high 80s during the day and around 50 at night. Beautiful and sunny with plenty of stars to be seen throughout the night. The moon was full and while we didn’t do any night runs, it would have been the perfect night for it.
Starting with Saturday, I rolled up into the strip mall around 8:30a, Mark and Tilly were already there waiting. So I pulled up, we all introduced ourselves and started talking about Tilly’s rig. Man that thing is a monster. It’s a 74 Chevy with a big block and 44s. Tilly did all/most of the work on his rig and it has a lot of nice features for the trail… trust me when I say that you’ll spend some time tripping out on all the neat little features he has going on his rig. Although I didn’t get to see Mark’s bobbed Suburban, it sounds like it also is one bad ass rig. :thumb: A few minutes later Randy rolls up and after a quick run into the market for a bottle of Jack. I always forget something… but this is a first for missing the Amber Restorative Fluid. 100% unacceptable!
A quick drive up the road and we are unloading the Chevy off the highway. The ten mile or so drive up the dirt road to the trail head was interesting… Tilly apparently added a tranny/ps cooler a few days prior and we had some problems with the hose coming from the steering gear. First the clamp came loose and the hose popped off, then later, the hose burst. A few short stops for bleeding and repairs and we were on the trail.
I don’t know… while I have only run this once before, I remember it being harder than it was? Don’t get me wrong… it was fun. Lots of FUN!! I think I got the strap once or twice, Tilly got it once or twice, and Randy got out without the need for outside assistance (I know I suck, not sure what Tilly’s excuse was?
).
When we finally got finished with the trail, I didn’t know how to get out.
There were a few options and the one we ended up taking, a route suggested by the GPS on the Jeep), took us down a rocky road that was pretty fun. First Randy almost rolled down a 200 foot mountain from a very narrow and rutted climb (suggested road), then to a down hill that had switch backs that I could barely make… both Tilly and Randy opted to just drive straight down this steep hill. . A bit down the road it turned more into a sandy wash and I kinda forgot that I built a slow mover… a few seconds of watching it, I understand Tilly and Mark, who were following me, were taking bets if and when I would roll. Next thing you know, I hit a huge rock in the road and I start losing it…. My initial thought was a blow out in the front passenger, and while I was trying to control it, I slid the rear end around and when she came to a stop, I was on two wheels teetering. Luckily, after a second or so, it decided to right back on its wheels instead of its side. A few minutes up the road I came to a fork, I stopped to wait for the bunch and what do I see what I turn around? Tilly’s rig on fire!? I flip a bitch and head back… by the time I get my fire extinguisher out, Tilly is shooting his load up into the engine bay. Let me tell you guys… Tilly is IOR material. He doesn’t know how to not bring a show! . We get that buttoned up and next thing you know, we are back at Tilly’s trailer and bidding our good byes. Tilly and Mark headed home while Randy and I headed over to Cougar Buttes to find a spot to setup camp.
After some setup, dinner, and whatnot, we hung out by the fire and proceeded to tell stories that can only be told on an IOR campout. Stories that only Jack can bring out of someone. Stories that I cannot tell you on a public forum!
Then comes Sunday! After eating, cleaning up, and loading the rigs… we were off. We looked at an AMAZING looking trail called Hammer. This is it boys… we gotta go back soon and run this! Randy felt that there was too much of a risk of body damage (I say there was no risk, it was GOING to happen in there )... And since I wasn’t stupid to run down a trail like that on my own, we proceeded to Bullfrog as originally planned. Now… I have only run Bullfrog once before with some guys from JKO. That day turned out bad and it now seems like the shithead that fucked me that day also didn’t run the trail (it was his run and he lead). As we ran the trail (which is VERY well marked), it became clear to me that the previous run was designed to miss pretty much anything of difficulty. Now the trail isn’t really too difficult, but there are some nice extra credit sections that break off from the main trail that were pretty fun and harder than Mottino the day before. Once we were done with that trail, we were done. Both of us were low on fuel and we did have the long drive home. Too bad we didn’t get to run a few more of the trails out there, but there is always a next time!
All in all… this was a great trip. It would have been nice to have had a few more of you punks out there with us, but there is always a next time. Mark (bobbed burb) is new to the club and will make a tremendous impact… the guy is seriously full of energy and is fun to have on the trail. Tilly will hopefully show his face here before long and he too, will be a great addition to the club... he likes to wheel and he likes to wheel hard. (edit: Tilly is here (!) and his user name is apeshit, trust me when I say it fits!)
Of course, none of you’d be happy without pictures (seemingly reading comprehension wasn’t a subject taught in the Bakersfield Unified School District). Here are a few to wet your palate and the rest can be found in my Picasa Albums and YouTube Channel (videos might take a few days to process, so cap off your junk for a few Victor ).
