Swamp Lake Trail: July 26-28

The Rogers family got off to a late start on Friday, so we did a night run into camp. Let me tell you, this trail is way more fun at night. I lost the trail a few times and took some nasty blind-lines down the drop-offs. It was a blast running in! We had the typical IOR shit talking on the CB on the ride in, which was broadcasted in the main camp at Grouse Lake - and not very well received by some of the "sensitive" off-roaders in camp :thefinger: . Of course, some in camp were very happy to see me because I had a welder :lol3:

The Rogers family had 3 jeeps representing IOR, which turned out to be 60% of the IOR rigs. In typical IOR tradition, 80% of the original people who committed to going did not go :lol3: . Fortunately for those that didn't go, there probably wouldn't have been any space for you to camp comfortably anyway.

This run was a huge turnout in total, way bigger than expected and too much for my tastes. Every camp site was full, so we had to camp away from the lake and the main group. The camp site sucked, but at least our late-night hell-raising didn't disturb other campers. The trail was crowded BIG TIME, like Rubicon Trail crowded. On Saturday, passersby were complaining to us that every campsite on the trail was taken. Several groups gave up on camping on the trail and decided to run out and camp at one of the developed campgrounds instead. It was so crowded on Saturday, that we went exploring and had to wait for 20 minutes to go up the grade North of Grouse Lake because of traffic; our Jeeps had to back down 3 times!

The only mechanical problems we had were Bigfoot's TJ 4-banger overheated at the top of the grade on the 168 and Bigfoot lost his spare tire on the trail. The spare tire was found on the trail and delivered to camp by an awesome dude in a Toyota. He was super-cool for doing that!

One of the Trailblazers broke the pin for a lock-rite in his D35. I broke out my Welder and die grinder, made some shims, then Whitesnake welded his gears together with my Readywelder. We got him going in a couple hours and it seemed to be working fine when we left. I also heard that another D35 was having issues and that one of the NAXJA rigs was having problems. Matt & Becka and the Rogers Family left early on Sunday so I can't report on any breakage on the run out.

The weather was great, but it did rain late on Friday night for about 1/2 hour.

It was a really fun trip with some great wheeling, but I think next year we should do a smaller IOR run rather than go with a huge NAXJA / Trailblazers / IOR / 4x4him / facebook / the whole world is invited Group. The IOR run we did last year with 6 rigs was super awesome and everyone got a primo camp spot without crowding tents next to each other.

It's funny... some are always complaining about us, yet welcome and call us with open arms when they need us. Funny shit right there!

ANyhow... sounds like you guys had a GREAT trip.... wish I could have gone. Next year? lol.

Meh... I didn't hear any complaining. There were a LOT of kids there, so you had to know going in there were "sensitive" ears. I was happy to see everyone and thought it was great having multiple groups get together. I consider myself a part of multiple clubs and like to hang with all of them whenever I can.

And I didn't find the trail crowded at all. Didn't pass anyone going in on Thursday and no one but our group came by on Friday. The same going out on Sunday, didn't see a soul. There was a big group that passed by hoping to get our spot on Saturday... but that is why we go in early to make sure we get it.

I was bummed we didn't get to hang out more. We had a great potluck Saturday and it was fun hanging out with everyone by the "Campfire".

I was part of the last group to drive out around 11am. That welded rear end drove out great. No problems. On the drive home Richards brakes caught fire right before the Grade going out of Shaver. Also, Josh (i think that's his name) pitman arm was REALLY loose. Tightened the bolt and cooled off the brakes and all was well. Stopped an hour for dinner and got home about 8pm.

It was all ok. Even at 8000 feet Richard was able to huff and puff and blow out the fire. They smoked for awhile though.

One guy tried to tell me how he didn't appreciate my CB talk. I gave him a big fat :thefinger: and told him he should have turned his radio off at 9pm in camp then. I was told about someone else complaining as well. No hard feeling on my end, I found it amusing.
I was bummed we didn't get to hang out more.
Me too man :beermug: . We were just camped too far from the group to hang out much other than for a few hours while playing in the lake and when I trolled through campsites a few times to BS with people. We got pretty drunk in our camp Sat night, so we chilled close to the supplies and where our antics wouldn't offend anyone.
I was part of the last group to drive out around 11am. That welded rear end drove out great.
Glad to hear he got out fine. He was a very nice guy. I was really worried about those stock D35 shafts holding up to a welded diff. We left camp at about 8:30am got home just after 3pm; was unpacked, 3 Jeeps washed, and showered before dinner time!

The highlight of the trip for me was seeing a bald eagle snatch a dead fish from the surface of the lake and take it to the top of a tree right behind me :salute:

On the tow rig or on the trailer? And that's before going down the grade!

I know I was concerned because we expected you much earlier. I had my radio up so I could hear it in case you needed help. I turned it down a bit when I heard you talk about the mosquito biting your clit! I didn't want to have to explain to my daughters that you do in fact have a vagina! :lol3: No complaints from me! :drinks:

I had a great time. The only person I knew was Richard before the trip and everyone was more than nice considering I don't drive a jeep. They even baked Don 3 birthday cakes.

Those were the "Cliter Gitters" that were attacking Bigfoot's vagina and making him want to stop every 15 minutes to put on bug spray :lol3:

Took zero pictures and video on this trip. We ran in at night on Friday and hauled ass out as fast as we could on Saturday morning (wife had to work the graveyard shift that night) and nobody got stuck, so we really didn't stop other than to water a couple of trees.

Becka made me an awesome 3-boob German chocolate cake for my b-day, but it melted

Not much mechanical issues really. Welded up the broken D35 locker in camp. Was happy to use Chris's welder, but we had welding rod and jumper cables if needed. Will welded up a broken bolt on his tire carrier in camp with welding rod. I had a power steering hose leak but it was OK, just filled the reservoir once. Will cut a tire that he plugged, in camp. Other than towing Richard the last bit of trail with the broken rear locker there were no issues on the trail.

There were 20 vehicles total on the run, so 20 rigs in camp. We've had 30 plus a few times and everyone got a camping spot around the lake, but it's tough when you get there in the dark and can't see. When we mostly get there at the same time we find a way to use all the flat spots for tents and park the rigs on the uneven ground. But, it can be close quarters with a big group. We usually seem to have a couple different groups hanging out around the campfires and food, so you can go back and forth and join the conversation and company that suits you. This is a family oriented trip, there were a ton of kids there and they played hard non-stop and had a blast. Not exactly the party down get loud and gross at night kind of run, though we had plenty of fun conversation about the gas burner and lantern "fire". Beemer had a full bar for afternoon and evening, and a full coffee bar in the morning. Good stuff.

On the drive out my grandkids asked if we could do this more than once a year, they had a great time. We had a pretty large group make the hike to Lil' Doris Lake on Sat morning, which is a pretty cool place. Lot's of fishing and floating in boats and various floaties in the lake. Overall a chill time with good company and good wheeling.

I guess my brakes were a little hot coming down the hill with the camper on the truck. When we were on the 4 lane and saw Josh's Jeep pulled over on the side of the road the brakes got hot enough to catch on fire on one side bringing the truck to a stop. Not enough fire that I couldn't blow it out, but it was a little exciting for a moment. Josh had a very loose bolt on his pitman arm.

I am surprised you have time to tell this story.... I assumed that there would be a mile long line out your door, as I have never met a woman that could claim that, not even the pros! :lol3:

Had a great time, great company and beautiful weather. I'm already looking forward to going back! I had a little trouble with my steering on the way home so thank you to Richard, Don, Jeremy, and all the others who pulled over to help me out. Simple fix, just had to tighten a bolt and I was up and running strong. I had a great time meeting many of you and look forward to our next wheeling adventures!

What springs did you get? You probably needed them with that new cage.
