Johnson Valley / Goatfest 11/22-11/24
Brad enticed many of us out to JV on Friday with tales of t-shirts and clear skies, but when we showed up it was 35* and pouring rain. And guess who didn't show up Friday, yep B-rad - and we stayed up drinking till 4am waiting for him to show
The partying was small this year, but what it lacked in participation was easily made up for by the usual IOR antics done on a larger scale. BTW - sorry for all the phone calls, texts, emails, and voice messages we left everyone at 1am each night
SATURDAY
Saturday was cloudy and cool, but no rain, and with Abendx finally joining us, we decided to run Outer Limits. The rocks were very wet and hard to get traction on, but in many ways it made the trail more fun than usual. As usual, we told ourselves that it would be a half-day run, then we would run more trails later - but it turned out to be a 9 hour ordeal
.
Roger was having a little bit of engine trouble, but he kept it going and really kicked ass on that trail. Becka did a little driving and showed "full commitment" when she smashed in matt's hood and tweeked the dash. Cliff is an awesome spotter and very entertaining character on the trail. Matt had 3 wheels come apart (yes, you read that right, 3-WHEELS!). The DIY beadlocks experienced total failure, and one tire was pretty much totally off the wheel. Matt didn't bring a spare to JV, so we got Brad's Juggy out of the trail and used one of his wheels to get matt to the end of the trail, while some of us ran back to camp to get a trailer and tools.
I off-roaded my truck and trailer out to the exit for Outer Limits and we got Matt back to camp. Cliff, Becka, and Roger rode back out with me. Roger decided he was going to ride in Matts jeep while it was on my trailer on the way back to camp, but when I stopped to talk to brad for a minute, Roger jumped out to take a piss without letting me know and I drove away leaving him in the middle of the desert at night
. Luckily Joey Campbell found Roger and gave him a lift - but he didn't have an extra seat so Roger rode on the bumper
And just when you thought the fun was over, BobbedBurb (Mark) and his gang of crazies dropped by our campsite late at night and invited everyone on a quick late-night run up Chocolate Thunder. That turned in to a 3+ hour adventure. The guys that went on the run were exhausted and went straight to bed, while the remaining few partied to the wee morning hours. There was a little puking and making hats out of Corona boxes involved
SUNDAY
Sunday was sunny and cool, the kind of weather you expect at JV this time of year. We decided we were going to run the rigs up SOS that morning, which is one of the 3 hardest trails in JV. Again, we planned to spend a few hours on that trail, then maybe run something else afterward. That trail beat the hell out of the group. Brad broke a hydro line. I had an electrical issue that Matt helped fix with a zip-tie. Fred busted a rear driveline / yoke / link mount and killed his battery. We got Fred to the end of the trail where we left his buggy for recovery the next day. A LOT of tools/parts recovery gear were used on this run. We started that trail at 10am and didn't get back to camp until 8:00 at night. What a long day on the trail
This was an awesome trip. We ran some challenging trails in the worst of conditions so it was a great test for the Buggies/Juggies/truggies. Other than a small electrical issue that caused a half hour of downtime on SOS, I was very happy with the way my buggy performed. But now I know that I NEED rock lights like Brad's
Video coming soon.
