Swamp Lake Aug 1 2015
The annual swamp lake summer run was awesome (as usual).
Jeremy ran in on Thursday with a small group. Alex and Rob ran in Friday Morning, as well as Goatman with a big group. Don ran in with a group early on Saturday morning and they had an 11-hour run from hell, with lots of breakage.
Beck*A*Poo in her TJ, Victor in his FJ80, and myself in my JK ran in as a group on Friday afternoon. Becka and I decided to keep the doors and windows on our Jeeps so we could run our AC in the heat at the lower elevations. This turned out to be the BEST decision EVER!!! Halfway into the trail a FREAK thunderstorm hit with massive rain, hail, and lightning going nuts all around us. Victor's new SmittyBilt winch took a crap during a nasty recovery in the middle of the hail storm and Becka's Warn had to save the day. We were drenched from that recovery, thank goodness we had warm / dry Jeeps to crawl back into and our gear stayed completely dry. This crazy little storm lasted about 2 hours, then the sky cleared up like it never happened. We made it to camp in 4 hours, Becka had to be winched once and Victor needed help a few times. Other than the broken winch, there was no other damage in our group. We ran out the 2nd half of the trail early on Sunday morning, with a couple of winch pulls on the FJ80, we made it out running an easy pace in 3 hours. About as perfect of a run as you can hope for.
As usual, camping at Grouse lake is the best camping ever. At 9,000+ ft elevation, its the perfect way to escape the summer heat. We had a great time wheeling, swimming in the lake, relaxing, drinking, and talking shit with friends. Can't wait till next year.
