Calico 3/31/10

:Thumb: :wings: :thefinger:

had an awsome time,i had my lil B  i mean jeremy rode with me. we met Henry, Cris, & Rigo at the meet'n spot. we headed to Calico and met up with Scott. i was expecting chorizo & eggs but maybe next time. anyways after we all got deflated & unloaded, just sounds funny. we headed out to do some wheelin. Chris led the way, he took us through some tunnels and then the bypass around gatekeeper. right away Rigo got crossed up and when he gave it a little gas SNAP!!!!!! he broke an axel. we ended up using a a hilift & some ratchet straps to keep his wheel from coming off the jeep. got his rig moved to a safe location off the trail. after getting Rigo and his crew into other rigs we headed back to the trail and started to do some wheelin!! Calico is beautiful, if you haven't been there get there. the trail was alot of fun with some challenges here & there and with some really tight spots for us JK's. we ran into a couple of XJ's from Rancho Cucamonga (sorry if i spelled that wrong) and one of them put on a litle show for us, and not to be out done by an XJ with BFG all terrains Henry decided he better tackle this wall to. i'm sure someone got pics & video of all this. the colors of the mountains & hills around the trail were awsome ranging from every shade of red you could imagine to a light green. i wanna get back there as soon as i can. the last obstical was GATEKEEPER. we got Henry to do it, talk about some scary sh!t. boulders just waiting to swollow your rig up. after finding the right line Henry made it through. and like a dumba$$ i decided to give it a try, after making it through the first part pretty easy it was time for the rig swollowing boulders. almost getting through it my passenger rear tire gets swollowed up by the boulders sending the front of my jeep pointing to the sky. and not to mention my taillight and rear corner into a boulder. i asked henry to bring his jeep back down and hook up to my front bumper and usng his winch he got my jeep leveled and i was able to drive it up onto the rocks i need to get me through GATEKEEPER. now chris had to do it since i did & he made it through the tough parts but got hung up on a rock that looked like it has reached up and grabbed many diffs & cross members. we placed rocks, rocked his jeep, placed rocks, rocked his jeep, and finally we decided i would back my jeep up and give him a little tug to get him off that rock. BUT!!! after i got into position they were able to get his jeep freed up and he was able to take another line and make it through GATEKEEPER Scott said he will do it tomorrow.

and now
here is a slide show of the pics i took, and some scott took with my phone.

Great run Guys (and gals)!

I got some awesome video, even some clips of Henry and Larry doing Gatekeeper. Unfortunately, my video camera died when it was my turn to run it  . Doing one of the most notorious runs in the West with a lightly modified Jeep and no video :banghead: . Luckily, Scott and his wife took pictures. Larry and I are the only JKs I have heard of that have completed Gatekeeper going uphill. Gatekeeper did give Larry some trophys. We probably would not have done it if we didn't get to spot Henry going up it. We could pretty much see what lines worked and which ones didn't (and there is NO margin for error; make a small mistake = instant body damage). Yep, that auto tranny sure makes the technical stuff much easier.

The only pucker factor I experienced all day was driving around that crumbled ledge. It even looks sketchy on video.

I'm glad you guys decided to give Calico a try, its one of my favorite places to wheel. Cool history, awesome scenery, and world class wheeling.

That was some good teamwork on Rigo's broken axle. We got lucky that it went on the first obstacle and not deep in the canyon.

As soon as Scott posts his pics to photo bucket, ill get a video of the trip finished.

Hey Larry, I think we may be the first JKs to complete Gatekeeper going uphill (certainly the first ones who were not heavily modded).

* WayofLife did it, but like a pussy, only going downhill (he would not go uphill on it).

* Andy, the owner of Finish Line West tried it uphill in his monster JK, and mangled/busted his front D44 and took two winches.

Good spotting, good driving, luck, and big brass balls. Infectious ROCKS!

Hopefully he dosnt whip it out to pee at the Ricky Martin concert. That faux-hawk sends mixed signals.

I got Jeremy on tape peeing, saying "Im making my own waterfall" :lol3: :lol3: :lol3: Gonna put it in the vid.

I did a night run up gatekeeper in Calico the night after everyone left. It was pretty cool at night. I have the pics to prove it.

This is about half way up. I almost rolled it at this point.

This was near the big hole. luckily I made it through.
