SATURDAY- SEPT 17th- LOCKWOOD/ YELLOW JACKET / MILLER JEEP

Postby Lorie » September 6th, 2011, 12:59 pm

Looking for others who’d like to join us for a day run up the mountain! We are meeting at the Flying J off the 5 North Hwy in Gorman at 8:30am and will leave by 9:00am.

I feel like the clock is ticking for my favorite backyard playground; as it'll be closed for months before we know it!

Anybody want to ride??!

Lorie

Where exactly is this place? I'm from Bakersfield and might possibly be able to make it. I've got a TJ on 31's with open diffs, and no winch. Is it worth showing up for me? Or is this pretty rough stuff?

Thanks.

Zak.... you can do this trail, but why? Since the fires, it looks no more than a burned out bomb blast site. The trail itself is little more than a dusty dirt hill and a stock rig with a noob driver could do this trail without issue. There used to be a fun section towards the top, but they got rid of it before they reopened and I don't recall many, if any, optional lines. So, IMO, an ugly trail with few, if any, fun lines. Can't say that I would ever recommend this trail until something grows back and makes it at least pretty.

If they removed the Yellow Jacket portion, I'd say you could find better wheeling if you threw a handful of pebbles on your driveway. As I also understand it, Yellow Jacket is illegal to run. Wilderness or some other Sierra Club bullshit.

@OP: Seeing this is just a repost from another site and has nothing to do with IOR, maybe post a link to whomever is actually conducting the run (who is "us" ????). Might give others a better opportunity to decide if they want to go. You listed zero details. No rig requirements, nothing?? Also, if you are now representing another club, please tell us who it is.

Zak I ran miller jeep with my 2000 Cherokee with a 4" lift and 33" BFG A/T's and open diffs and didn't have any issues, I want to run it again with my 89 xj with a 2" lift and 31's... Miller jeep was easier than freeway ridge IMO, but I agree the only fun part was the last section towards the top. The rest of it was tree roots tiny rocks tight curve and kinda steep climbs... Piece of cake for an xj :-) so ur tj would be a walk in the park ;).

Some of the switchbacks tested my flex and I had to pick better lines but this guy i knew in an xj on 37's locked f/r said he actually ran up it in 2wd.

This is actually my favorite local trail. IMHO, it's better than Freeway ridge. It's does have a large burned portion and it can be dusty... there are a couple fun rock spots to challenge you and the last 1/4 is rocks. Yellow Jacket is open and legal to run. It dead ends, and is about an hour to do. Trees are very overgrown on it so if you like your paint...
It also has some mud holes that can be deep.
There is a nice campsite by the creek as well. Miller dumps into the Gorman OHV park, where you can also get your fill of rocks.
