Goatfest Johnson Valley trip Nov 19-20

Postby Goatman » September 26th, 2011, 8:13 am

Our annual fall trip to Johnson Valley will be Nov 18-20. This trip started as an event to raise money to reopen Surprise Canyon, but has turned into an annual fun trip to JV. The trip is casual, we just get together and go wheeling. We might serve dinner Sat night, and we might have a small raffle, yet to be determined, but we are definitely going wheeling. There are trails in JV for all levels of build, including stock, so this is a good time to go if you've never been. Even if you have a stock or slightly built rig you can jump in an empty seat for a trail run or drive around and explore for miles and miles. Of course, there are ton's of hardcore trails and moderate trails. We'll camp on the lakebed, Mean's Dry Lake, at the end of Boone Rd off of Hwy 247.

I broke the steering on the buggy last week in Ridgecrest, so I have less than 8 weeks to get it re-designed, I better get going and order some parts.

And you'll have your steering fixed, but are you going to switch it up a little in the process?

Richard, just refill with a quart of steering fluid every 1/2 hour, like you did last year :stirPot:

The re-design didn't work very well, but it did work, so I put off changing it too long......

Unfortunately, I've decided to go full hydro, which means I can lower the ride height and push the front axle forward more. The bad ass 12 to 1 Lee steering gear is going into the KOH car. I love my assist steering, I'll have to be satisfied with full hydro.

The turn off at Boone Rd is roughly 180 miles, depending on where you live. From my house it's 182 miles.

Usually takes me 3 hours, depending on traffic between Boron and Barstow on the single lane stretches.

Yes, it is. Unfortunately Surprise Canyon was closed to motorized travel, and we did what could be done to try to make the courts and BLM accountable but it has not worked, Surprise Canyon looks to be forever closed. I started this event in JV, called the Rockin' XJ Jamboree, to raise money for Surprise Canyon. The event has always been in JV. Folks started calling the run Goatfest and the name stuck, and there's no need to raise funds for Surprise Canyon anymore, so the annual run has become a casual weekend trip to JV.

Just a reminder that this is the one trip a year to JV where you can go and run with folks who aren't totally hardcore. Johnson Valley has stuff to enjoy if you are stock, have 33's and one locker, have 35's and two lockers, or have D60's and 40's. If you've never been to JV, and want to check it out, this is the trip to do it on. We'll make sure you get to a trail that is what you'd like to run (but come and let us know, we can't hunt you down or read your mind). There are close to 30 trails out there of all types. Plenty of hard stuff, but moderate stuff as well, and plenty to see.

We'll be camping on the lake bed. Come through Victorville or Barstow to Lucerne Valley, go east from Lucerne on Hwy 247 (22 miles past the stop sign) and turn left on Boone Rd. Drive north on Boone Rd for about 4 miles to the large dry lake bed and look for our camp.

I'd like to come up and run some of the "easier to moderate" trails and get some experience. Never been up there.

I have a Rubicon JKU on 33's, locked on both ends and 4.5" lift. Now I just gotta practice and learn..

Anyone tent camping out there?
