There is more than just swamp lake in that area, some of the other trails are easy to moderate and I think Im going to go up some time Thursday and either get a room depending on what time I get there and find one of the moderate trails to run. Then head in friday and run another and do some fishing and find a camping spot.

I still would like to do a run on Saturday with the group Im just wanting to get up there alittle earlier and check out the other areas. Im a noob so I dont want to go out on anything hard without a OG like DD lol. Im would like to meet up with anyone on friday that wants to head out on one other other trail besides dusy or swamp and do some fishing. 2 out of the 9 trails in the area lead to a lake. I have read the coyote lake has the best fishing but not sure how difficult this trail is...

I'd like to come, I wouldnt be able to come up until Friday evening or early Saturday morning though, and as long as I dont get called to work Saturday. Would a JKUR with 3" lift and stock tires be OK for these trails? Ive done Red Lake up there stock but didnt go into Coyote cause I was solo and didnt want to chance it alone. Im not afraid to rub and slide. :brows:

Aldo did the swamp lake trail in his brand new stock rubi 4-door the other week. We had to do a bit of rock stacking and creative spotting on the north end, but he did great. You are more than welcome to follow bigfoot and i up on saturday morning. We plan on being at the trailhead at 8:30am.

I'll have to put in the request at work but Im pretty sure I could go :) I missed last swamp lake trip and I have wanted to go but works been flooded with hours. I'll see what I can do :) friday evenin works for me, I'll just have to see what works better for my lady.

I just read how crazy swamp lake is... Is my little Cherokee on 31's gonna make it? I don't mind a little damage but I don't want to hinder anyone by being towed most of the way thru the trail either.

Hmm.... bye bye con, hello swamp lake!

Ugh... you guys should have still done the Con. I would have likely gone.... but just couldn't make a promise.

I see you have DD and I saw somewhere someone was talking about figuring it out without assistance. In actuality, the Con may be the best trail around for this thinking.... really, it would be very tough to get lost and there are a billion people out there, so someone would always be able to give pointers or tell you where you were at... shit, I have been several times and still don't know what all the areas area called.

Swamp might be just as easy to follow? Don't know as I've never been.

So.... put me down as the same maybe I was before for the Con.

INFO on the trail:

Directions to the trailhead (take the southern access);

FROM RICHARD'S FORMER POST:
"Here's directions: Take Hwy 168 from Fresno east about an hour to Shaver Lake. As you are coming into the town of Shaver Lake make a right turn onto Dinkey Creek Rd, where there is a sign saying Wishon and Courtright Reservoirs. Go about 12-15 miles on Dinkey Creek Rd and look for another sign saying Wishon and Courtright Reservoirs, and make a right turn at the sign onto McKinley Grove Rd. You'll immediately cross the bridge over Dinkey Creek then go about a 1/4 mile and you'll see two roads that go to the left, one cuts back sharply and goes to Camp Fresno, and the other one is 10S36, make a left turn onto 10S36 and immediately turn into the trees on the right, which is where you drop the tow rigs. Continue on road 10S36 for a few miles, passing some logging roads, until you come to a road to the right with a forest service gate, which will be open, turn right on this road. Turn right through the gate and go for another few miles (could be 3-5 miles, hard to say) until you come to a road going to the left that also has a gate, which will be open. Turn left through the gate and this is the start of the trail, continue for 6-7 miles until you reach our camp at Grouse Lake. If you get on 10S36, and go to the first gate and turn right, then go to the first gate and turn left, you can't miss it.

The best place to gas up, if you're not towing, is in Prather at the bottom of the big grade going up to Shaver, or at the station in Shaver Lake. There is gas at the Dinkey Creek store but it's expensive. There are showers at the Dinkey Creek store, a little cafe, and ice. You can top off your ice in the morning if you need to. Camp at Grouse Lake. It never hurts to have some firewood at Grouse Lake since the firewood can be scarce from regular use. There is a decent outhouse at the camp at Grouse Lake."

Remember that you will be camping at over 9000ft elevation. It will be nice and warm during the day, but in the 30s late at night - so bring enough sleeping bag. Also, its a great idea to bring some inflatable rafts, we had about 6 of them on the last trip and they were in constant use. Don't forget the bug spray.

Make sure you have the spare parts and tools you need for your rig. Double check your cooling system, there are several steep rocky climbs on the trail and a vicious grade getting up to Shaver Lake.

Here is a great link with GPS coordinates: http://4x4trailmaps.com/4x4Trails.php?Trail_ID=45

Looks like we might have a good turn-out.

Yep, start at the southern trailhead and head north, camping at Grouse Lake. The route in to Grouse lake is easy to find, just stop and walk Rooster Rock before you drive up it so you can get the line right; you need to start climbing on the right side and crest the hill on the left side. If you have 4-low, 1st gear, and aired-down tires Rooster Rock will be no problem.

If I have the weekend off JeepDeere and I may go. We would have to do the easy stuff though as JeepDeere is not up and running so it will be the family rig. Let me know if that is a bad idea...
