Torque Converter....

Well saturday we went up Rancharia road with Chris, Henry, and Jason. Jeep was doing great all morning. We came to a stopping point and turned around, Rebecca said she smelt something burning, i didn't hardly smell anything. Then Henry started to lay on the horn when i pulled forward some.

Found trans fluid pouring out of my jeep. Crawled in the snow and found it was coming from the front pump seal.

Drove it a 1/4 mile farther till it stopped shifting. Shut it off. Then Chris came through in a big way and towed my jeep by strap the remaining 22miles or so out of the mountains. It was a crazy pull through the snow and put a serious strain on Chris' jeep and im sure his nerves at times. Can't thank him enough for that pull out of the woods. :drinks: :Thumb:

Got a tow from chevron to the house. Pulled the transmission today, found the cause of the front pump seal failure. The torque converter is cracked on the pump drive on both sides of slots. It appears the last back/forth loading I had done while turning around on Rancharia had pushed it past its limit. It may have been cracking before, the wear marks on the torque converter shows that it has been cracked/wearing for a while. The front pump and trans itself are fine. The stator shaft and main shaft are in good shape, the front pump rotates as it should and the torque converter bushing is ok.

Now i have to wait a couple days to get a torque converter in, then put the jeep back together...

Big thanks again to Chris for getting us out of there.

No problem, you'd do the same for me :drinks: . That was one HARRY pull off the mountain.

My ABS was going ape shit on the drive home. I took my front wheels off to look at the sensors and they were frozen solid in a block of ice! I thawed them out F&R with a hair dryer but they would still act up. All the wiring and connections seem fine. I may have to take a trip to the dealer.

What did you have to do to retain all of the ABS electronics when going to 60s?

Currie makes their axles specific to the JK (so does Dynatrac, Solid, G2, and Teraflex). Removing the sensors results in lots of computer issues. Plus anti-lock brakes are nice to have.

Abs sensors and water don't mix.

Ive had them underwater lots of times, with no trouble, so I hope it doesn't become an issue. I PMed one of the guys on JKO that runs the service dept at a Jeep dealership. He told me that he thinks the fact that they were frozen in a chunk of ice was messing with the computer inputs and that electronics tend to act funky when frozen. He instructed me to unhook my battery for a day to reset the computer, then try again. Well, I just hooked my battery up and drove about 20 miles and the issue seems to be fixed :wings: .

I don't even notice ABS when on the trail, it only kicks in when I slam on the brakes at speed - which is why I like the feature. Now the ESP feature, I didn't like that and disabled it.

My jeep was 2 months old took it thru some deep water and bam dashboard lit up like a christmas tree. Drove it home abs was kicking in locking up both rear tires. Towed it to dealership they replaced 2 bad abs sensors.

Well, got it all back together and running/driving.

Replaced torque converter, bushing and seals for front pump of trans, flexplate, and also repaired rear trans mounting holes.

Talked with the guy at ptp for a bit about the torque converter failure, he said its not an uncommon failure in my trans, and that as long as nothing came apart, should only have to inspect pump.

Thanks again Chris for the help getting outta the woods. And thanks Becca for driving me around and lending me your jeep.

:drinks:

Randy at PTP is a good guy and really knows his way around those older trannys.
