Hey everyone. Sorry I haven't posted sooner, but been working on the logistics of getting my wreck back to Ventura.
It was a pretty nasty roll... the first wheel slid off the road and basically took the rest of the Jeep with it. Once that was in motion, the steep hill did the rest . I knew I was going over and there wasn't a damn thing I could do to stop it, so I held onto the steering wheel and enjoyed the ride. I counted upside down about 5 or 6 times. The Jeep came to a stop and landed on it's feet on a pretty steep incline. The motor was still running, so I shut it off and climbed out. The first thing I thought was my dog. My little Chihuahua "Cujo" was chilling in the back and was ejected out of the Jeep. I stated frantically looking for the dog and found him 20 minutes later, hiding under a bush (I could swear he flipped me off), but he was unscathed. I didn't have a scratch on me, but the rig looked pretty jacked up.
Next morning, I called DD and he said: Let me get a crew together and we'll come get 'ya. I tried to explain how bad it was, and he said "no problem, we'll have you out before dark". I can't even tell you the relief I felt to hear someone saying that so confidently !
A couple of hours later, I met up with the crew (Desert Dog, Casaintsfan, TJe and his lovely wife) and we made our way to the wreck. They came up with a game plan and a couple of hours later it was back on the trail. As DD explained, we used his winch, hooked up to my winch, drove the wreck some of the time and little by little we kicked that ditches ass... I also want to mention that there was another crew coming up the hill and they provided a side strap in the beginning, so we wouldn't go rolling down again. His name was Mel and I forget his company, but he manufactures performance parts for Jeeps. Cool dude and his crew.
Once the Jeep was back on the trail, we put three tires back on the bead and installed the rear coil spring, which had flown off. When we were ready to roll, I kicked out a hole in the windshield (it's not as easy as it looks in the movies) and off we were. My injured ride finished on it's own power and drove it all the way to I-5.
My initial assessment is that the frame and drivetrain seem fine. I think a bracket busted off the rear suspension and maybe the rear axle might have issues. TJe was following me back and said the rear was real wobbly. A lot of body damage, so we'll see what happens.... I'm waiting for the insurance to call me, so I'll keep everyone posted.
Also want to give a HUGE thanks to Lori, who provided moral support, drove me around and helped me make this happen.. AND gave me a Cujo a ride home
Hi Everyone,
FIrst of all I just want to say that I am happy Lorenzo and his dog are ok and that he got the Jeep out of there.
I'm also lucky to be alive due to the jeep roll bar and wearing a seat belt. Reading everything, looking at the pictures and that youtube video are helping me come to grips with the fact I almost died Sunday morning.
However I was a little taken aback when I read the thread here.
There are some parts missing to this story, mainly that there was another human passenger in that Jeep (me) and his wife (passenger in Lorie's jeep who watched the entire thing) were also on this trip.
Anyway, I am in no way, shape or form trying to come here to stir up shit.
I was just surprised that the rollover was explained here and at jk-owners leaving out two people who were there, who experienced and witnessed it, and also helped a great deal picking up debris, risking further injury by looking for Cujo under where the jeep stopped rolling and basically as complete strangers who didn't go postal over what happened.
Lorenzo, give me a call. You have my number. I Facebook friend'ed you and you accepted but then deleted me. Not sure what's up with that but would like to see how you are doing.
Lorie, if you are reading this, thanks for getting us up the rest of Miller and back to camp.
Tim,
I was a bit surprised to read your post. Jeep or no Jeep, new friends or old ones, but ESPECIALLY fellow jeepers, you just don't leave like that after something like this happens. Lorenzo stated he could really use your spare and he'd return it to you. You didnt offer it up and he didnt feel like asking twice. We could have used your help with the recovery....and cleaning up camp. We were throwing trash away that wsan't ours. We had to load up all of Lorenzo's stuff in the back of my Jeep. So between all my shit and his, a trash bag was the Last thing we should of had to worry about. You didn't offer any help and what I do remember is you saying how you couldn't wait to go home and take a shower....do you understand how insensitive that made you look and how we felt???? We knew we had a LONG freakin day and night ahead of us...it would have been nice to have our fellow Jeepers stick with us. Let's just say it was disappointing. I'd never expect that from someone I was wheeling with.
Shit happens. You're in a sport that requires some balls. You also need to be there for others. Try to look at it from another perspective. That's all I'm sayin'.
And your welcome for the ride up the rest of Miller. I'd do it again if I had to.
