Welding mild steel to cast iron.

Postby chuckanut105 » December 1st, 2013, 3:09 am

So I just ordered both front and rear trusses from Artec. The question I have is what rod(that's right I said rod as in stick welding) should I use. Google has ten thousand different opinions but none are talking about axles. What is the conciseness on this?

Nickel is what I have used, costly but works pretty good. The biggest thing is the pre-heat and post-heating you will need to do to cool the different metals off at the same speed.

Personally I wouldnt even try welding to a pumpkin unless its just for show or none stress bearing items. I would weld to the tubing and making a bracket that will utilize a few of the pumpkin cover bolt holes.

Heat and lots of it, my front axle i cut out cast and welded the casr to tube with flux core while using torch to pre and post heat, looked closely at it 2yrs later no cracks

Nickel is the ticket for stick would still use heat...
