Hey guys im looking to do a sye and driveshaft for my tj! I am on a tight budget so i cant drop 1200$ on paying 4wheelparts to do it so i was looking at some cheaper diy options... Have any of you done a hack and tap sye on a tj? I was also looking at the advanced adapter sye and driveshaft for 500$, im just a little scared of tearing into the tcase... What have you all done and recommend?

sometimes you can find one already done for sale on other forums like NAXJA, Pirate4x4...

hack and tap is an ok way to go. Mine is still holding up. I'm sure tearing apart the TC isn't that hard though. Just keep everything in order and do it in one sitting.

Are cherokee np231s all the same as the tj ones?? or are there certain years to look for?

I put one in for under 450 total. J B conversion sye 199, and a Adams drive shaft 230.

If you need an extra output shaft for a tj I have one.

thanks guys! going to get some time and money and buy a kit and tackle it myself... But thank you for the quote on parts and labor thats a great price considering 4wheelparts quoted me 1125$

I am looking at doing SYE on my 89 YJ. I have a vibration now in driveline and figure if gonna look at fixing it might as well do the SYE now. Is it very hard to do? I am looking at a kit with everything inclusive.

Hey EJ21 and Young Gun,
I pulled, tore down and reinstalled my NP231 in a day, and did it twice in two weeks. (Needed a new chain after I put it together from old parts) The assembly is actually pretty easy. If you guys want to tackle it, I have the snap ring pliers you need (it would be a good idea to buy a set though, they are worth the $20) and I'd be willing to walk ya'll through it. Its a good idea to know how to do open the T-case anyway, because eventually your chain will stretch and need replaced, which requires removal and split of the case anyway.

Let me know if you guys want to tackle it on your own. Its not too hard of a task, and with air tools and a set of metric gear wrenches, it doesn't take long at all.
