hole in my tire

Postby Codytaylor92 » May 29th, 2012, 11:17 am

hey guys, and gals, i just got a pin size hole in the side wall of my new tire and i was wondering if anyone knew how to fix it or had any suggestions. i know no one will touch it becouse of liability reasons, i was hoping someone knew something that i could do to fix it myself or something. dont want to spend another 200 for a tiny pin hole.

i dont know about using a tire plug on the side wall though just seems like it would do more harm than good, but i will if there is no other way

You can plug it or patch it, either will work. Patching will require the tire coming off the rim, buy a good (large enough) patch and some tire glue. Or, just plug it. Many of us have run tires for many miles with a sidewall plugged. Of course, this is unofficial advise, since no one in their right mind would plug the sidewall of a tire.

hole in my tire

Postby Zak.Taylor » May 29th, 2012, 1:35 pm

I've run plugged sidewalls before, it's not a great idea, but at 200 per tire, it's worth a try. Just make sure to put it on the rear of your rig.

Plugs will work, but I feel a patched sidewall is more durable and appropriate. Plugs do well in the tread area.

Do I have to take the tire off the rim to do a patch?

I have ran for thousands of miles with numerous plugs in the sidewalls. Not a great idea for anything more than a trail fix, but it often works.

Alright thanks. I'm going to try a patch first but if that fairs to be to hard then I'm going to do a plug.

Yes .. tire must come off for a patch. Its the best of the options, but a plug would likely work without issue. I'd rather see you do it the safer route, since you can.

Put your spare on, plug the damaged tire and use it as a spare

I've run for over a year with a plugged sidewall with no issues, so it can be done. Wore a couple tires out running with a plugged sidewall.
