NEED SUGGESTION / HELP ON 2 THINGS

Postby cornejojeep » August 28th, 2012, 11:10 pm

I went wheeling this weekend and found out i have crap for a front bumper. Does anyone know someone in town that can fab me up a decent front bumper for a good price for a cj7 that can also later accomodate a winch when I can afford one?

While offroading I ran into an issue that has me puzzled. I filled up my 20 gal tank at chevron on 178 and was 30 mins into freeway ridge when my jeep starting bogging down and acting like it was out of gas when going up hills. It would completly shut off, and not start until we got it on more level ground and manually pour some gas into Holley truck avenger carb. to get it started. It did this on 2 more steepish inclines and then we decided to add my spare 5 gallons of gas into it and it seemed to help for about 30-45 mins and then it had same symtoms again....would act like it ran out of gas up hills. We got to the last hill and the only way for me to try and go up it was to do it in reverse....and the jeep stayed running perfectly all the way up hill! I drove the jeep all the way home yesterday and today on the same amt of gas (so its not that it did not have gas...havent filled up yet since chevron and 5 extra gallons) and found a steep dirt hill today in front of Aarons house, drove it up and left it idle at an incline to see if it did it again and it ran fine and never bogged down and shut off. I was originally thinking, fuel sending unit was bad, but after doing this test now I have no idea. Any suggestions? Or any one or good shop that can figure this out for me? Fuel pump is fine (squirts good), I think I can eliminate carb since it ran fine after adding 5 more gallons......so not sure now.

NEED SUGGESTION / HELP ON 2 THINGS

Sounds like a weak fuel pump to me
2013 Jeep JKUR on 35" Kanati Trail Hogs, 2.5" Rough Country coil lift
2006 Yamaha Rhino 660 on 28" BajaCross, with winch.
2008 Dodge Ram 2500 6.7 CTD leveled with 20's and 35's.
Some boom toys here and there too.

The bumper: basic CJ bumpers with recovery points and winch plate are very cheap, much cheaper than having someone custom make one.

FUEL issue: Your Carb is experiencing altitude sickness, compounded by wheeling at angles, and is in need of adjustment. This is why ALL off-roaders dump the carb in favor of injection. If you work at it, you should be able to find a "sweet spot" that works OK at sea level and at moderate elevations. In the old days, when wheeling in the mountains, you would pop the hood once the carb started acting up and make an adjustment. It sucks, but is the way of the carb. Ditch it in favor of injection and never look back. Another thing that would cause what you are experiencing is a bad ignition control module (in the distributor); i have seen the exact same thing happen, especially with older GM engines, several times. The odd thing about a bad ICM is that it always runs great in reverse but not forward while turning or on hills.

I'm for the IAC also.

Learning how to adjust that carb on trails is also very important. Keep a carb kit if you're going to continue to run it, and learn what the preferences are at different pressures.

While running swamp lake a few weeks back a few carbed CJ's ran through camp rather late. They were running like crap because of the altitude. While stopped at the lake they could have had those carbs apart and adjusting them so they wouldn't have to worry heading up the trail.

I guess I need to deal with the dreaded truth.....ditch the carb. and cough up for fuel injection. I know there are several for my AMC 360 now (Howell, AFI, etc) but does anyone know how to install these properly in town and a cheaper route to go in teh 360? Any suggestions would be helpful....meanwhile I will look up some info. on them. Maybe this will eliminate all my fuel issues.....better for the cost!

Or......might be cheaper just swapping a whole new set up and ditching the 360 if I can find someone selling one and someone who can help me through it since Im def. not that mechanically inclined to do it.

You do have a lot of decisions to make... If you were to swap engines most people would say go GM (me included). There's all sorts of ways to do the swap for the electrical. Or you could just get an EFI kit from howell or AFI. The electrical for those would just be the same as swapping the engine. I would run it how it is and learn a bit about how to adjust the carb.

My buddy gas a 1978 cj5 that was having similar fuel issues he changed from a manual to electric choke and changed out the float. He now goes up really steep stuff with no problem. Also check your fuel filter and pump. Hope this helps.

If you decide to go.fuel injection its cheapest and easiest.to grab donor hard parts from a junk yard, then buy harness and computer chip from afi

I have had great.luck with afi products

If you need some diagnosis assistance for the carb.I know richard can figure it out, or start with a service manual and tune everything to factory specs, then adjust from there as needed
