sniper class

Postby Desert Dog » September 26th, 2013, 3:32 pm

I returned on Monday from a 4-day sniper class. This class was for people who are already advanced shooters, so didn't delve into ballistic calibrations and shooting fundamentals. This class mainly dealt with working under stress, stalking, hide building, SOP for different ranges, improvised sound suppression, defeating modern technology, transition between weapon systems, firing from vehicles, Target ID, and coordinated fire. It was both physically and mentally taxing - but fun as hell. Anytime I get to shoot shit and blow shit up is a good day IMO!

This class was taught by a former FBI sniper instructor and current instructor for the second biggest city in the country. Of the students in the class, only 2 of us were civilians and we were the top shooters (as usual).

Upon early arrival, I dialed in 3 rifles for this class at 600 yards and adjusted my MV to match POA/POI in my ballistics program for the environment with each load I brought.

And my custom 700 in an AICS chassis with a Nightforce 5.5-22, shooting 175gr SMK:

The SCAR got the majority of the workload because it is very accurate within 700 yards and can do double duty as a CQB weapon. It is just an amazing rifle; as light as an AR15, as accurate as most bolt guns, as reliable as an AK, almost no recoil pulse, and more ergonomic than anything out there. I crawled around in the dirt and sand for 4 days and fired over 300 rounds through it and it never malf-ed.

And on the last day, I had to make my way to my FFP, set up, and make a 1,100 yard shot across a valley onto a 15" steel plate, and get away unseen. Mission accomplished!!!!!!

I can't wait to step things up to the next level next year = 338 Lapua and .50 to a mile!!!!

$600, and I burned through about $400 worth of match and training ammo. Pretty cheap considering I did a 6-day sniper class in Nevada last year for $1400.
