Best Way to clean a soft top

Best Way to clean a soft top

Postby 4X4CRZY » July 19th, 2012, 8:30 am

So after a winter of wheelin in the mud, I want to clean the soft top. Can anyone recommend any good cleaning supplies or the best way to get the top back to normal??

Never owned a soft top, But I would think warm water and mild dish soap and a rag or wash cloth would work fine. Just dont use Armor All. Hate that stuff!!

The best stuff, and I mean BEST stuff out there is 303 Protectant. It's the best stuff to use on any vinyl top, like a boat or Jeep, and it's very good for cleaning and preserving the vinyl glass. I haven't used it since I sold my boat, but if I had a Jeep with a soft top I'd be using it regularly.

It depends on which material your top is made out of. Is it the old style canvas or the new vinyl-coated sail cloth?

I had the older treated canvas soft top on my YJ and that can get saturated with fine dust inside the fabric. These were VERY hard to clean and could even stain. Only use mild soap/water on these as most cleaners will damage it.

My JK has the newer vinyl coated sailcloth top. I wash it with soap/water when I wash my jeep, then sometimes hit it with 303 when I want to look good at the Meet & greets. Don't get the 303 on the uncoated sailcloth on the bottom of the top, this will ruin it.
