Im running 37's and Im thinking about selling another guitar so I can afford to get gears. Anyways Im thinking after looking at the chart thats up on the forums that I want 5.38's but I just wanted to check with you guys before I pull the trigger. Ive heard that the pinion is weaker on 5.38's in D44 and was wondeering what your opinions are on this. Mines the 3.8 with an auto tranny.

Most folks go 5.13s with D44s and 5.38 with D60s.

Thanks man. With these tires it wont hold in OD on flat level ground with no weight in the Jeep. Gears are gonna have to happen sooner than I had planned.

I have 513 in mine and I wish it was lower. I think the way you drive Robb your going to break anything.

I agree that the 5.38s would seem better from a power perspective, but they will run weaker. 5.13s for the win.

I now have 5.13's in our JKU and they helped quite a bit. We still drop into drive a lot driving up to tehachapi but before it was 2nd and drive only, no OD whatsoever. We're running 35" KM2's (so basically 27" tall tires)

I wouldn't worry about gear strength difference. Any real difference in strength comes from a slight difference in tooth contact area, and unless someone has determined what that is with both a 5.13 and a 5.38, then everyone is guessing. It is not true that a gear set automatically gets weaker as the ratio goes up. It's actually possible, based on the tooth count that makes up the gear ratio, for the 5.38 to be stronger than the 5.13. On a D60, a 5.13 is a stronger ratio than a 4.88, and on a Ford 9" a 4.88 is stronger than a 4.11, and a 5.40 is stronger than a 4.88. Basically, get the ratio you want, I wouldn't let a potential strength difference be a factor unless you can find HARD evidence one way or the other between the two ratios.
