What trail gear do you carry?

Postby Phimosis » January 31st, 2012, 3:23 am

What all do you carry? I'm shooting for overkill to make sure all my bases are covered for winter, including stuck, off the trail, by yourself and not able to get my Jeep back to the roadway.

This is what I carry, (except for hard parts) fits in a large duffle bag:

waterproof 8k winch in front.
Bumpers with tow points/shackles front and rear.
snatch block
Tire deflators, air compressor
12v plug in spot light
tire repair kit
trail jack
tow strap
tree protector
tire chains
2 flashlights
folding shovel
24 inch trail axe
machete
survival knife with ferrocerium fire starter
backup pocket knife
backup multitool
bear sized pepper spray/bear bell
fire tinders
Bear Grylls survival kit with snare, wire saw and fishing gear
Coleman Black cat heater
Coleman single mantel lantern
Mylar Emergency tent
Mylar emergency sleeping bag
Mylar emergency blanket
Snow boots/parka/hat/snow gloves
katadyn mp1 water purification tablets
randon food items
back pack
EMT first responder kit with cervical collar, splints, Ambu bag, oral airway, prescription medications for pain, antibiotics, truama hemostasis kit (I have medical training)
ACR resQlink eprib (GPS emergency radio beacon)
hand held CB with add on whip attenna (new this week!)
Digital camera to document me getting myself killed (like in the movie 127 hours)
box of Kleenex facial towels (in lieu of portable toilet)
Bottle of Jack Daniels. Just kidding.

If there's anything you carry that you think might be a nice, lightweight add-on, please post it up!

Thanks in advance!

You forgot the most useful equipment item of all:

Cell phone and charger. You can simply hike a couple miles to a high point and make some calls. CB is useless for stranded alone in the wilderness situation. Most of the experienced members here have been rescued or been part of a rescue, and the cell phone has been the determining factor in coordinating the recovery.

And next on the list: Spare parts and tools. Jeeps can limp back to civilization with an amazing amount of damage if you have the right stuff on-hand.

And the best preventative measure: Don't go winter wheeling in the mountains alone! Mickey, Casaintsfan, and others have had to survive overnight with kids stranded in the mountains. Murphy's law always prevails; we all break down/roll/get permanently stuck - its an expected part of the hobby and happens more frequently in the snow. But why put yourself in a potentially life-threatening survival situation when you could have just went up with a second vehicle? Cant find anyone to snow wheel with, go to hungry valley instead that day :lol3: . Years ago a jeep got stuck in a ravine up in the Kern County mountains during a blizzard and recovery was impossible; that jeep had to stay up there until the snow melted! Its easy to become a "statistic" and an example of "what not to do" during the winter in the mountains.

In the summer, it doesnt really matter. Civilization is always within a day's hike away (probably downhill too).

Dog biscuits totally make sense. But, I'm not sure if I can get the will power up to implement that! Wheeling with a gun makes sense, too. I just don't own one. Thanks for the input.

I didn't mention cell phone because it's not part of my recovery/survival bag. However, I disagree on how high you rate it's utility. If there's cell phone signal, it's not really wilderness. Having cell signal implies you are within 5 miles of civilization. A lot of places I go won't have signal from the time I leave town until the time I get back. But, I carry 3 forms of communication, with the eprib being the last resort. That thing will work anywhere in the world.

About tools, I agree, but space wise I'm getting limited. I've been looking for an all-in-one kit so I know what's in it and don't have to remember to steal parts of my primary tool chest for offroad trips. If there's a specific model that you think works well, please post it up. On spare parts; that can get challenging from a space and weight perspective. I already have things like duct tape and zip ties in my bag. Anything come to mind that is prone to breaking that is small, light and cheap?

About the dangers of wheeling in the winter by myself: That is exactly why I do it. It's like the difference between taking lessons at a high performance driving school and actually being a racer. Going wheeling with friends is fun and exciting, but not hair-raising. The adrenaline junkie in me needs hair-raising. I do go wheeling with friends too, but my solo night runs in deep snow in the back country are the most satisfying. I do go prepared. I have the survival gear. I know how to use it. It is a test of man and machine over nature. I used to club race liter class bikes. I stopped after a low side at almost 100 mph, a trip to the ICU and 5 surgeries. Snow-wheeling is safer, but still comes close enough in excitement to satisfy the adrenaline fix.

Just kidding about the JD? Bring it dude....it can get cold out there. Besides it can be medicinal. Lol. On a serious note, an infrared light is very inexpensive and can help with detection at night by Helo. Keep exploring!

I carry:

basic hand tools
very basic spare parts (tire, front hub, assortment of sensors, 1 ujoint, steering parts, fan belt)
bottle jack
1 quart oil
1 quart atf
1 pint brake fluid
1 tube RTV
1 container jb weld
1 roll rescue tape

.75 case of water per person, with a 1 case minimum
3 days worth of mountain house meals and a no flame stove
large first aid kit
1 blanket
1 hoodie
1 flare
2 headlamps

cell phone
GPS SPOT communicator that links to my cell phone
ham radio
cb radio

lunch, if i plan on being out more than a few hours

Everything fits into a 66 quart plastic bin that I strap down, except for the water which goes under my back seat. I do keep a much larger inventory of stuff at base camp, but I tow the jeep and have room there for a lot of spares that i don't need on a trail basis.

I've surprise camped on the trail three times. Once I was stuck and my winch failed. Twice someone else was broken, and I stayed with them while they performed repairs (keeping the option of loading everyone up and giving them a ride to camp/town).
