How do you wrangler owners do it?

Postby Badooder » July 23rd, 2013, 8:09 pm

so at work this week we installed a 2.5 inch rubicon express lift kit on a 89 YJ, I took it out for a test drive after the install to quality control the technicians work...god that is an awful ride...driving down the avenue in Ventura I felt like my teeth were going to be knocked out it was such a harsh ride. Then I jump on the freeway and it sounds like I'm in a wind tunnel doing 120mph but I look down and I'm only doing 60. I drive a 93 XJ with a 4.5 inch rubicon express lift and it rides like a Cadillac compared to this thing. This is only the second wrangler I have driven and both have been like this...is this what you guys deal with to get your shorter wheel base? If so holy crap hats off to you cuz I must be spoiled!

I ran that lift for about 2 years on my yj, best leaf springs i ever ran.

What you were feeling was new springs that are not broken in yet.

Be sure to remind your customer it will settle in a couple weeks and be 1/2" lower in height.

Those springs flexed and rode great for a standard lift kit. I ran 35" tires with cut fenders and mild stretch to 100" wheelbase, super stable and predictable on trails.

Some people would suggest a shackle reversal for front, but most of them never set their shackle angle correctly.

Thats one more thing to consider check the yj's shackle angle its a very intergral part of how the susoension feels. Keep it around 60 degrees after the springs have settled.

Also..How much air pressure in the tires? What kind of shocks? These and the things mentioned above will contribute to a rough, shitty ride....
98 TJ, 5.7 HEMI, 545RFE, JB Conv. HD231J, HP30, D44 rear, ARBs, 4.10s,35 in MTRs, 15x10 alloys, Gen Right G3 Aluminum fenders and rear flares, Fox 2.0 RR, Premier Power Welder, Warn 9.5 CTI, Rampage Top, a few other goodies....

I think the pressure was set around 32psi, not sure, thats why I have technicians hehe. The shocks are Skyjacker Hydro 7000's...I know not the best, but the guy that ordered them didn't know any better. I'm glad there's somebody on here that has run this lift, it was nice to be able to tell my customer that the height will settle a bit and that the springs had to be broken in so thank you for that. The customer was super happy with the way it looked. I gave her a nudge in the direction of lockers for her next upgrade :Thumb:
