i know alot of the turnout issues lies with the fact that there are only a hand full of guys in town able to run some of the trails you all hit. there needs to be more runs that dont require as much of a rig for alot of people to get their feet we so to speak. look at freeway for instance i only ran it the one time in the dark on a stock sidekick. but its been talked up so much that people who are unsure of their rig dont think they can do it. so when there is doubt they just avoid it. it took me weeks to get a friend of mine to take his rig down cow flat because he had no idea. hes never done any off roading. now his feet are kinda wet and he is willing to explore a bit more.

over all i think there should be more close runs for people with stock or nearly stock rigs to get their feet wet on and realize that wheeling isnt point the rig and mash the gas untill you get where you are going whatever you breaks is ok.

crocker springs in taft would be a good one. it has a couple off camber and side hills and some rutty climbs nothing bad but enough that your wheeling a little and not just on a dirt road going for a drive
Ya see this is where i was coming from. One of the reasons i also mentioned some easier trails. There are so many different trails up above kernville that are scenic and have creeks to go swimming in, natural waterslides, and other things to do around them also. Im down to do these anytime. Get the wife to drive a bit more and get more used to driving the jeep

Then again tell me to STFU if im wrong.
Only because you asked..... damn, you aren't wrong.

You know... what might be really cool, would be to have monthly runs in quarters. One month mild, one month medium, one month wild... then start over. Mix in whatever else in there as popup runs. IDK.... example might be:

JAN.Gorman
FEB.Calico
MAR.JV
APR.Freeway
MAY: Calico
JUNE.Con
July.Sherman
AUG.Shaver
SEPT.Ridgecrest
OCT.BC109
NOV.JV
DEC.JV

Then... what might be really cool if we are doing these monthly, is to have the run either the weekend before the meetings so we can talk about them or the week after the meetings, hopefully pulling more interest with something that will happen that weekend (i.e. the second weekend of every month).
I like that idea.

Thoughts on future club alternatives to the Rubicon Trail

Postby Franeebeth » August 1st, 2012, 9:29 pm

I like the idea of having runs more often and some set times. I would go more often if I had the advance notice to request it off from work. Silly job always getting in the way but I need it to afford to wheel :)

More thoughts.

Easy Trails (min rig requirements: no locker, no lift)
Freeway
BC109
Gorman
Sherman
Miller
Big Bear
Asuza Canyon
Truckhaven (dry)
Santa Barbara (behind the hill, not sure of the area's name?)
Orange County (Santiago Canyon area)

Moderate Trails (min rig requirements: small lift, 33s, one locker (stock Jeep Rubicon approx fits here))
Johnson Valley (Cougar Buttes area)
Calico
Rubicon (dry)
Big Bear
Swamp Lake
Truckhaven (wet)
Pismo
Moab

Difficult Trails (min rig requirements: lift, 35+ two lockers, possible body damage)
Johnson Valley (Hammers)
Calico (scrambler, the cuts, et al)
Shreeder Canyon
Fordyce
Rubicon (wet)
Mottino

Just Nucking Futs! (min rig requirements: lift, two lockers, 37s+, rollovers likely, probable body damage)
Johnson Valley (Hammers)
Ridgecrest

Help me fill this in!! Once we get lot's of stuff in here... we can decide what to do with it. My idea of monthly in quarters or something else ???? Please speak up!

Minimum rig requirements are not hard and fast rules, but following them will make everyone happy.... you and those around you. Obviously driver experience and the weight of their ball sack can make a difference here.

Not sure where Panamint and Jawbone trail system would fit in?

Thinking more about my earlier thoughts. Doing the run the weekend after the meetings would be the smartest. This way we could play some video of the last run to get some excitement going just a few days before the next scheduled run. My thought here is that it gives people less time to think about it and they will be driven more out of their emotional response.... once they've gone a few times, they will likely be a regular as IOR rocks!

IDK the name.... if you are on the other side of the hill behind the city. There is a ranger station back there... not really wheeling, but a fire road, some hot springs, and some nice scenery. I've hunted and camped back in there. I bet there is a trail system that would take us back to the lake as well... but the last few times I have been in there, the extensions going north were closed.

Also.... thinking we have to make the requirements more stringent. I know... no one wants to see that, but honestly, I am one of those that shy away from some trips, based upon the list of who's going. Nothing against any of you, but it gets expensive to replace snatch straps every time I go out because someone didn't have proper pull points, nor their own strap. I don't think we should attempt to work with people on these items. I am thinking a very basic list (i.e. strap, proper pull points, first aid kit, extra fuel, extra water, jack, proper spare tire, plug kit, etc... really, many of these things are probably already in their rigs for daily driving.)

I thought DD's guide was pretty comprehensive, might just need to do a pre run tec inspection at the meet and greets or something?

lol... they always show up short. I really don't want to go down this route of inspecting vehicles and getting all anal with our membership and while you are right, DD wrote up a great manual for this, I think these very basic items need to be pushed HARD, not as recommendations. If someone were to not have these items, for less than 200.00, someone new could be setup (includes everything I previously listed as basic items). I don't think 200.00 is too much to ask of a new member (or current one) that wants to wheel in a rig that costs thousands of dollars or likely, much more.

I see where your coming from. Maybe a pre run checklist of some kind that people can download? We could turn DD's list into a PDF with check boxes that people could download. I just think its sad the the most experienceed wheelers are hesitant to join runs because of newbs like myself :)

Wow.... GREAT idea!! Love the checklist idea.

Hmm... I knew I shouldn't have said that. It came out somewhat wrong. I like wheeling with new people, whether they are wheeling noobs or just noobs to the club. In fact, wheeling with wheeling noobs is the best... I love the look on people's faces and the genuine excitement when they tackle their first big obstacles. But.... noobs often bring substandard rigs (serviceability and capability) and no equipment (recovery, spares, etc..)... that is my point. We just need to figure out a better education plan and have a (required) basic equipment list.

So.... I'd love to wheel with you. I'll be (hopefully) going to Fordyce and the Con in the next three weeks and we are looking at a Labor Day trip (I think you already expressed interest in that one).

*** and one more thing to the required list.... an air source. That should still keep the total to near 200.
