I have a strange situation on my hands. Not with the commando, but some friends of mine are going through a divorce right now, and I have the opportunity to get several cars. 2 of which are 1 ton 80s chevy 4x4s, and a jeep cherokee. The chevy's are where the real problem starts. Several years back they let their neighbor keep those 2 trucks there while he went to prison for a while. He never came back for them and he eventually died, so the trucks really belong to a dead man. Since they were on this property would they be the property of the property owners now? I have no clue what paperwork would have to be done in this case.

You can take posession of them through the DMV, but you may be responsible for unpaid registration - taking title can be a tricky thing and there are many variables. Definately call the DMV on this one.

Now you can also do this: Get a junk slip from the DMV for the vehicles, free of charge. The DMV started the "junk slip" program to make it easier to clean-up abandoned vehicles. Tell them that the vehicles were abandoned on your property and the true owner has died. You want to clean up your property and need a "Junk Slip" to dispose of them. The Junk slip process basically just certifies that the vehicles are not stolen and that they will no longer be driven or require registration.
1) If you plan on just parting out the vehicles and scrapping what you don't use, the process ends here and it costs you nothing.
2) If you want to get them road legal again, get them running and smog worthy, then re-register them as Salvaged. This can get complicated though.

I'm hoping at least one of them has been off the records for long enough that they don't know about it. Because I hear its extremely easy to license a car that isn't in the computer.

The cherokee is 2wd. It'll be my gf's DD. It is the same color as yours though.

get the vin and put a lien on it ,there is a waiting period...a buddy of mine got a boat that way that was in field for a few years...just a thought...maybe just a little underhanded

lean queen look them up in the yellow pages most of the time fees get erased done plenty that way just lean them for storage fees

hey dude, When something sits in your possesion for more than 30 days and no contact from an owner you can start the Lien Process. I use to work for a local auto shop and you wouldn't believe how many people would just bail out on a car once they found out how much it would cost to fix their cars... We would call and call and call finally we would start the Lien Sale.... Let me know if you need help on this..

P.S. We never started any repairs until it was authorized by the customer...lol

I got my Samurai via a Lien sale. Every previous owner of that vehicle has to be notified, verifient that they nolonger have interest in that vehicle. the list for mine was about 35 people.

So how do i tell a dead guy that he needs to come pick up his trucks??? I think the new plan on these would just be to part them out and scrap the rest. Still in the process of getting permission to do whatever I want with them. I'm thinking about this junk slip thing. Been looking into it a little more on the DMV website. Got some business there on friday, so I'll inquire about this a little more.

If you need any help with going about a Lien I can ask my buddy. He does them alot with cars at his shop that get abandoned.
