I wish we could just bring everyone home, this story is just too close to me, 1991 during Operation Desert Storm right when the ground war was over, a buddy of mine James Miller, he was our supply clerk got a letter from his wife telling him he was a new daddy to a baby boy, James Jr. He showed everbody the pictures, he was the happiest man in the world.
The next day we were headed to Kuwait, our unit attacked from the west from Saudi Arabia into Iraq, while heading to Kuwait, we stopped, the unit formed a 360 degree perimeter to make sure we had cover and no surprise attacks even though the cease fire was already in effect. James did like he was trained, he jumed out of his truck and started building a hasty fighting position( a shallow fox hole for you civilian minded people ), well someone had put us in the middle of a mine field, while James was digging he hit one of those mines and it went off, James weaopn was the M16 W/203 grenade launcher, and he was wearing a grenade vest with 40mm high explosive grenades, well the mine explosion caused one of the grenades to go off too, not getting into that much detail, James lost his life right there, he never met his new born son, and his son, now 19 years old grew up not knowing his dad the hero.
I miss James, I think about him alot.
