rubicon run dates poll

ok everyone that plans on going on the rubicon run this year we need to come up with the dates for the run.
please don't vote in the poll unless you plan on going on this run :thefinger:

i'm off from 7/9-7/24 so any time between there is fine with me but the weekend of 15-17th would be the best for me because i will have time off before and after the run.

it would also be great if we can all leave Bakersfield together.

there are also plans on maybe running 1 to 3 trails before the rubicon making it a 3 day event, run the other trails in one day and camping out at maybe a campgroud near the rubicon and then the rubicon the next two days camping out at rubicon springs and heading out on the 3rd day.

if you're not sure if you are going please post up so we can get an idea who might go and please let us know ASAP if you are or not..

if you've never been to the rubicon it is a trail that will challenge you and your rig, some of the tougher obsticals have bypasses but not all.
this is one of the most beatiful places i've ever been (#1 glitter gulch on freemont street in vegas) and cameras are a must :yup:

if you need more info on this run please ask and for run requirements,
33's and some damn good driving
1 locker and some damn good driving
something to poop in and the ability to take it with you.
minimums
1) A 4x4 vehicle in good working order with low-range.
2) Roll bar or factory hard top.
3) Functioning seatbelts for all occupants.
4) Functioning emergency brake or equivalant.
5) Spare tire approximately the same size as the ones on the vehicle, and jack/tools to change the tire.
6) Attachment points front and rear (hooks, clevis, D-rings). Tow-balls are not safe attachment points.
7) A tow strap rated at least 2 times the weight of the vehicle. Strap must have loop ends (no metal hooks).
8. Plenty of water and enough food for a 3 day 2 night run
9) First-aid kit and flashlight
10) Method of inflating tires after the trip (compressor, CO2, etc.) and a tire gage.

Highly recommended items:
1) A CB radio. Infectious normally uses channel 4.
2) Tools, jumper cables, spare fluids, common spare parts.
3) Tire plug kit
4) Fire extinguisher
5) 100% D.E.E.T.

i've included a pic of the July calender to help.
we also need to decide if we want to leave on a thursday or friday so i'll just put the dates for thursday thru sunday on the poll.
if you have more info to add please post ASAP so we can add it to this post.
we need to get this decided ASAP so we can get it in the upcoming runs section, and please post up what you voted and if you would rather leave on thursday or friday.

thanks
Larry

Sack lunch will be enough for a trip to the Rubicon?

I'd rather do it in June.... so maybe I'll go with you, maybe I won't.

33s and a locker? Must be MUCH easier in July from rock stacking. We did it last June and had a buddy with 35s and lockers on both ends and had to give him the strap a lot! Maybe some to do with driver skill.... but really, I'd call that a minimum before the Jambo.

Also.... you only plan on doing two days on the trail?

My plan was to leave on a Thursday and take my time driving there (read: enjoy the drive), spend Thursday night in a hotel, run the trail Friday thru Sunday, spend Sunday night in a hotel in Tahoe, then drive home on Monday.

Is the trail passable in a full size? My rig is fairly wide...

Yes.... you will have some tight squeezes, but the Con is doable in a full bodied rig. The only section that might be impossible has two bypasses (Little Sluice). You will need some good clearance and lockers (front and rear).

Not sure about the LV strip (I think it is fugly).... but this trail ranks very high in the beauty department, plus it is 18 twisted miles of rock crawling without a break!

Hmm.... if you follow DD's lines, body damage is likely.... follow Mickeys, and you might just roll that baby over.

Just ask anyone that ran the "easy" run at Hungry Valley.

But.... on a more rosy note, chicks dig body damage.

first time i went we left Oildale about 4:30am on thursday and met up with a couple more rigs in angels camp. we ran 3 trails that same day and camped out at one of the campgrounds near the rubicon. ran the rubicon to rubicon springs on friday and on saturday hit cadillac hill and then home.

on 35's i got hung up once and DD winched me back so i could get a better line, there was a bypass right there so if someone wanted they could go around. the only other time cable got pulled is when DD attempted soup bowl, other than that it was a clean run. some spotting was needed on cadillac hill where we had to get by a broke down CJ but other than that we had a clean run. if someone needs a spot all they gotta do is get on the CB and ask and we will get them through it. we just don't want to be strapping and winching someone every half mile, that would turn into a 3 day run on the rubicon for sure and maybe some night wheelin.

I voted for 7/14-7/17. I will be towing my JK up on Thursday and staging it on the Tahoe end of the trail (the drive will eat my tires alive). Then either meeting up with you guys on Friday at the trailhead (like last year), or later on Thursday if you plan on running additional trails close to Tahoe. After the run, Ill be staying an additional night in Tahoe drinkin and gambling.

You can run the whole trail in a day if you wanted, so going to the springs on the first day still leaves plenty of time to play on bonus obstacles, swim, and bullshit at camp. Getting out the second day is fast as long as nobody is broke down on Cadillac Hill. I really liked our pace last year - thought it was perfect (even though we didn't hit the trail till 8:00 due to my tardiness). We hit every single bonus obstacle except for little sluice, and made it to the springs by early afternoon.

As stated earlier, 33s are going to be really iffy if its as tough as last year. If you run 33s, make sure your Jeep is in very good running order because you will be sledding through the rocks on your undercarriage. Scott and Larry did excellent on 35s with lockers last year, only getting denied on a couple of bonus obstacles - but they are fantastic drivers too.

I cant make any plans that far in advanced with my job....I would love to go but with this new work (just started today) I cant make any guarantees. Hoping to have a really kick ass rig by then with 37s if all goes well but depends on how this job pans out. Whatever date comes out on top I will try and make plans to have off though. :salute:
After last run to hungry valley most of my drivetrain will be beefed up considerably.

Do most of you drive your rigs out there or does everyone trailer them? I'd love to do that trip also...but haven't ventured out that far yet.
I think I'm in the requirements of the run with the exception of the same size spare, but that should be covered by then. Anything else I could prepare for in advance so I'm not holding anyone back?

Most don't trailer. If you have sticky tires or Iroks, you can lose half the tread on $1800 tires in one round trip :lol3: , so using a trailer is best. Also some folks have rigs that are so built, they are not really safe for extended highway use and it it also better for them to trailer. But probably almost everybody will drive their rig. Your rig is for sure capable enough, just be sure to bring that full-size spare, the Rubicon eats a lot of tires. Another thing you may want to invest in is a fuel can and a way to carry it. And some sort of "trail potty" (you cant poop on the ground on the Rubicon anymore).

Awesome!

Are you also going to stage your trailer on the Tahoe side?

I trailer now, but I ran the 'Con a bunch of times just driving up. Logistics is easier when you don't tow since you don't have to come back around for the trailer. Of course, now we don't run the trail out to Tahoe, we just drive the trail back to Loon Lake and the trailers.

I can't plan that far in advance. I am hoping to make it.

Don't worry about having to drive your vehicle. I don't have a trailer and have to drive my Jeep there and back and have done it before. The only problem is worrying about breaking something that would prevent you from driving home, just be nice to your rig and you shouldn't have any problems. If I am able to make it I will be driving.

as of right now 7/14-7/17 67% of the votes with 6 votes, if you can change your time off it would be great.

when we had to poll before both dates tied with 4 votes each, so we had to do it again so we could make sure everyone was on the same page. here's a link to the previous poll.

another thing we could do so the TQ's don't have to drive so far to do another trail or three after dropping off their trailers is camp out at the springs for 2 nights and we could back track on the second day and rerun some of the trail backwards and back to camp again, if some want to just kick it at the campsite they could.
just another idea i want to throw out there.
