found a new project...but...

Ok, my Yj is nearly done/set for what i want out of it, since its my daily driver, I want to start another jeep build to try some other things and go a bit bigger. Plus the just plain works the way it is.

So i found the near perfect starting point, 94 yj 4cyl 5sp, all stock, unmolested, straight body, all parts still attached except no back seat. looked at plates last registered/smogged in 07'

The problem, I left a note on the owners house door, with a phone number and message expressing interest in jeep.

owner didnt call, I stopped by place i found jeep for the next two days, no answer at door.

today, the owner answered the door, asked him about jeep, he stated that he is not interested in selling its a "project", i pressed him slightly asked him how much it takes for a "project" to be made for sale.

owner said that if he does sell it, he said 2 family members have "dibs".

So my question to all of you is, how often should I return to ask about jeep, and how much should I have in cash on hand to convince him its time sell. For all i know of condition of jeep it most likely has either a transmission, engine, or major electrical problem keeping it from being a driver.

I have pestered countless people to sell me their old broke-down Jeeps, Broncos, Land Cruisers, and muscle cars that I had particular interest in. Some folks are either hoarders or have fanciful delusions of actually getting the funds, time, and motivation to do the project. Trust me, the owner will never give you a reasonable price and it will sit until it rots and rusts into a scrap heap.

Only rarely does a deal come along; 15 years ago, I bought a 69' Cutlass 442 in fantastic condition off of an old lady for $800. Her husband had died many years before and left the broke-down car covered in the garage on Oleander since that time. I towed it home to discover that it only had a blown head gasket.

When I was looking for a TJ for my son, there were lots of 4-cyl YJs on the market for cheap - with smog and tags. Your best bet is to target people already willing to sell, and make some cash offers. People need quick cash right now, and don't have months to wait for somebody to buy.
