Are there any trails or trips that would require carrying fuel?

The dumb guy like me runs out in middle of a waterfall then has to transfer fuel from a sami to a jeep.

I always carry on out of county trips. I used 5 extra on swamp last year. I always bring some to Johnson valley.

Mojave Road. You can get gas in Baker but its quite a ways off the trail.

Its smart to carry fuel on Dusy, Swamp, and the Con. Definitely Mojave Road. Remember, if you end up towing a broke rig at all, you will burn twice the fuel. You burn fuel like crazy on snow runs, especially if you are cutting trail, so I always carry a can with me after a close call on Piute Mt.

So carrying 5gal would be plenty? I've been thinking of how I'm gonna build a tire carrier and if I was gonna include a place for a fuel can. So thanks for the replies. Ill def include it in my plans!!!

Depends on the trail and the vehicle. On the MOjave Road (about 140 miles) Kody went through his tank, a 3 Gal Rotopack and then was donated a 5 gallon can off our buddy John's Jeep. I think I had a little under a 1/4 tank left when we pulled into Barstow and had added 1 five gallon Jerry can to my Jeep. I think my Jeep holds like 22 gallons and the 2 door JK's hold like 18 or 15. I think most of the older Jeeps only held like 15 gallons?

I just finished my carrier and built it to take two cans but Ill most likely use one of the holders for water most of the time if I can find a decent jerry can sized water jug.

Mojave road aside (hate that trip anyway), I have never needed more than my 3 gal rotopac on any other trail - and my Jeep only gets 9 MPG and I can only fit 16 gallons in the tank. I have never NEEDED to refuel on the Rubicon, usually have over a 1/4 tank left at the gas station in Lake Tahoe. I think you burn most of your gas on the con getting to and from the trail. Except for the Mojave road (which isnt really a wheeling trip), you will never have the need for 10 gallons of fuel on any other trail.

Be careful about making your Jeep into an "expedition" vehicle. Big tire carries with shit bolted all over the place kills performance on real trails. You Don't plan on taking your Jeep to Africa for an expedition across the Kalahari do you? I have spent 3 days on the Con twice with NO Tire carrier (spare laying in the trunk of my 2-door), 3 days on Dusy with no tire carrier, and 2 trips on Swamp Lake with no tire carrier. If you pack smartly, you can fit everything you need in a Jeep. Larry and Brad have basically done the same with their 2-doors with no tire carrier. And we bring everything!

So extra fuel is smart, just bring what you might need to get an extra 20-30 miles, and don't over-do it.

I Carry 5. I plan on taking off my swing away due to the extra weight back there and the extra top heaviness it gives me with the tire up high. But me being an xj I have more options than u do for storage :moon:

As far quantity, I've never needed more than one gallon.

Dusy for sure. Have never needed to use the gas can on any other trail...except to start fires and fill up others.

That being said, I usually carry a 3 gallon can...because nobody wants to be "that guy"
