depending on how far you wanna go, you might want to start at freeway ridge 4wd trail. i think if you start at the black gulch trail you have to cross the river :dontknow: but not 100% sure.
when do you plan on going, let us know and i'm sure someone will join you. spot you through gatekeeper and the rest is cake from there. i've done it in a stock LJ rubicon (31's) and a stock JK rubicon (32's) so you should have no problem as long as you have someone with you.

Black Gultch can be done from Keysville, which you can get to from 155 at the base of the dam.
You can get to Black Gultch by going through Freeway Ridge gate keeper off of 178, 33's and a locker will get you through.

Yep, 33s and a locker will get you through it all. It is an easy trail, except for one moderate section on freeway ridge (gatekeeper). It can be a very difficult trail, sometimes impassable, in the snow or if it is very muddy.

I also recommend that you don't go solo, especially the first time. Several people (you know who you are :stirPot: ), who are experienced wheelers in capable rigs have found themselves stranded in those mountains and had to sleep in their 4x4s. If you get stuck or have a mechanical breakdown (happens to everyone), you will have no cell service and the Rangers/search & rescue won't be able to get you in many spots. If you insist on going solo, at least post your contact number and trip details in the ICE section of these boards.

Good luck and welcome to Infectious Off-Road.

Done it in a stock XJ, a stock Trooper, and a stock Explorer.........but it's been awhile. Actually, years ago it was harder but during one of the fires a guy ran a dozer up the trail and knocked down anything difficult.
