I heard on the internet that you can get anything smogged if you know the right people. :thefinger:

Brad, what are your thoughts on the full hydro? Is that because you're pushing the axle forward and the current drag link and steering gear location won't work? After having a good working assist set up you might not like full hydro, but if that's the only way to make it work..........

We missed you yesterday Roger. Come over today. Looks like we'll move over to AJ's shop in a bit to get more room and get up out of the weather.

It's on Allen near Chris's house.

You got it Richard. Bumping the axle forward five inches is going to make running a steering gear tough. Also I am looking forward to cleaning it up a bit... getting rid of the panhard would have been nice, but just not enough room with the engine. Might be doable, but not sure the trouble was worth it.

What's the drawbacks compared to assist other than the safety net of being able to remove it from the system and as I understand it, at speed it isn't the best setup?

Not a ton of work done last night. Rain was an issue. Nice turn out. Thanks everyone for helping.

Brad I have done a ton of research on this and talked to some people who race this shit. Here is a quick rundown of what I learned.

1) I was told that there are 3 systems available to the public: A system that performs awesome at slow speeds, a high speed system that does OK, and a system that does neither very well! (I currently own option #3). The whole system is dictated by flow; the high speed guys run with less and the rock crawlers run with more. Cone dodgers run 1500psi pumps and little 4.5" pulleys, which will kill you if you go over 40mph. The desert guys run lower flow pumps and big 6" pulleys, which will whine/cavitate/overheat/barely move in the rocks and can cause "steering freeze" during breaking.

2) The KOH guys need a little of both, so their systems are customized beyond anything you can buy off the shelf. I have been told about "electric contol valves", "variable flow control", "custom surge valves and tuned springs in the orbitals", and return to center. Many are running weird hybrid systems with pitman arms and custom fabbed things. Most racers HATE full hydro, and are constantly looking for alternatives, but what they have is the best that is currently available. Im sure technology will get better in the next few years with some serious money and R&D being funneled into KOH.

3) For guys like us, everyone recommends getting a full kit, rather than piecing one together, so the pump/ram/orbital are matched. I was told that the only problem with these full kits, is that many of the fittings are very restrictive (especially the pump feed line). I had my system looked over and was recommended the following: Run a smaller pulley than what I am running. Shorten my pump feed line or re-mount my reserviour to make it connect directly to the pump with no hose. Change my small fittings on the return line. Drain the whole system, add a filter, and fill with clean fluid. Play with my caster to find the "sweet spot". Hopefully, this gets mine to where it is manageable. Right now, my hydro assist on my Jeep is 100 times better.

Joshy woke up bright and early at NOON, got his butt to the shop, and finished up making the mounts for the links.

Brad got up early and spent all morning getting the front truss fitted perfectly to the front axle (lots of grinding and fitting). We pulled the front axle, fininshed cutting off the old brackets from the frame, and took advantage of the sobriety to do a little more planning :lol3:

The 4-day plan.....uh.....hmmmm..... :dig:

The drawback to full hydro is that it sucks donkey balls compared to assist. Assist has the same or more power than full hydro, assist has much better feel and feedback, and assist is precise with great feel at speed where hydro wanders with little to no feel. If you have no choice, get hydro to be as good as you can, if you have a choice assist is much, much, much better. My buggy has assist and I love it, every time I get in a buggy with hydro I'm reminded how much I don't like it. I can run trails turning with one finger, actually I drive with the palm of one hand, with 40" stickies and a good assist system. I even use a quicker ratio steering gear for quicker turning going fast on trails and washes. Soooo much better than any hydro I've driven. Like I said, if ya gotta, ya gotta, but there is definitely no performance benefit, only fitment benefits.

BTW, panhards are cool, they make suspension geometry very simple. Very high roll centers are cake with a panhard, and are very good for rock crawlers. 3 links front or rear work very well. Shannon Campbell has won 2 KOH's with 3 links.

More progress..... all links are done.

We are at a stopping point right now... awaiting the dies for the bender and a spool of nickle ($$$)... then work on the basket, cage, and all other tube work will commence. The only big parts I am missing are the seats (ordered), struts (ordered), and the axle shafts, which should be here tomorrow.

I previously stated I was looking to run a 24" belly height.... well that is tall! But, in light of the longer wheelbase of 115" (end result: 10 in the rear, 9 up front) I will have JKU type issues with brake over... so 24, maybe 26 is what I'll be shooting for. The width and length should make it stable, with a ton of unsprung weight in those boat anchors I attached. Currently in this pic above, it is sitting at about four inches lower than ride height. It will be BIG!

Wheelbase was lowered the one inch because of clearance issues with the radiator and all the junk that attaches to the axle.

The narrowing that I was considering for the front is up to debate over here... after we get the struts we will cycle the suspension and see what kind of clearance I have up there..... currently thinking about 6 and eight on the front struts, but so easy to change if I decide differently later. I have decided, but not exactly sure where to cut yet, to cut out the b pillars. This will allow us to narrow the rear starting right behind the seats, rather than keep it full bodied for those eight or ten inches.

Axles centered:

And I could not be doing it without this guy! Josh whom is an expert welder, suspension guru, and taking his time to teach me quite a bit during the project (part of the reason it is slow going). I can now weld! It's not pretty... but he says penetration is good. His machine might make it easy though.... 100% duty cycle and turned up REALLY Hot.... which worked for me as I am not as slow as I should be with my beads. I think, once I figure out how to see my "path" better and learn to relax a bit (sure that will come with confidence), I'll do much better. Hell, I own a bender... might as well buy a welder too. :thefinger:

The two people that have been a HUGE help have been Pink Sock and Chris! Pick Sock has been with Josh and I the entire time building and Chris has been instrumental in getting us tools we didn't have, as well as supplying the Pizza (how did I get out of that??). There are a lot of others that have either showed up for support and a few that have worked or given solid advice (Justin, Kody, Jeff, Roger, Matt.... and anyone I forgot! (sorry... so busy)). thank you to all of you... ALL OF YOU!

And lastly.... one person has given us something of great value for the project... AJ, opening his shop to us is amazing. AJ, you are a great friend!

I am counting my lucky stars.... really, you all are great friends! I almost wished I lived local to you guys.... almost! I love the beach way too much! Speaking of the beach... what ever happened to that Josh guy that was going to set something up? In fact... what happened to that guy all together... if he's not local, maybe he should start a IOR chapter.

Sorry for the love fest... but I need to acknowledge the help.
