SOLUTION: RotopaX makes very nice low-profile cans that can be mounted almost anywhere with a little creativity. So I bought the Roto mounting hardware and 2 & 3 gallon cans. I looked at various mounting locations and found that the inside bolts on the tailgate hinges offer a perfect location. I made up a quick mounting bracket in about an hour to try out the concept and it works great! I used two 3" pieces of 1.5" C-channel and a 12.5"x6" aluminum plate. Ill make a really nice one when I get the time. This was just a quick garage prototype.
You can see in the pics that it fits without obstructing the lights or the license plate and it does not hinder the operation of the tailgate. The mount is so solid, that I can grab the can and shake the whole Jeep without the can moving. Its thin profile does not affect my departure angle and is protected from being hit. The same idea should work with TJs and YJs too, maybe even XJs. Thumbs up to the RotopaX
