Calico breakage

We spend a lot of time out exploring the trails......but sometimes.....the trail bites back.

So post up your worst damage of the month and we will all vote on it......Then point and laugh!

Calico breakage

Postby Lake_v2 » April 3rd, 2011, 10:30 am

Mark-83 Toyota- blown engine

Roger- 85 toyota- 1 locking hub and 1 birfield

Matt- 87 Yj- both front axle shafts, 1 valve stem, dented left rear corner/tore off liscence plate.

Uh... ya the washout obstacle on the way to wallstreet is nasty right now. I broke both front axles within seconds of each other while trying to get up it. Roger had broken his hub and birfield at same obstacle. Mark's engine gave up the ghost before we got to the gatekeeper at doran, which we were glad about that, woulda been hell to tow him out of the trail.

Me and roger limped back to camp in 2wd after self extracting and pulling my inner axle shafts out.

They were still the original 1987 small u-joint shafts, after 20ish hard trips it was their time. I am changing them out to the large u-joint stock shafts. just made cover plate yesterday and pulled out all the broken parts and pulled carrier out and inspected the lock-rite.

The locker is still in perfect condition and the carrier was ok.

Funny part to me was the passenger side axle broke in 2 different spots. The u-joint snapped, the ears bent out, and it broke the splined end off. I guess i had a bit too much skinny going on at that point. The rear end was diffed and both the front tires were bound up.

Roger's Yota, had lockright up front with upgraded shafts(not sure on dirty thirty deal). I feel worse for him breaking a shaft than me. I can get shafts easy at a junkyard, he has to order shafts for his. His yota is on 35's running a double t-case and 4.7 in one of the cases.
