Big Bear - AUG2011

First of all, Pete planned a great weekend of Off Roading and Camping in Big Bear.

Saturday was Gold Mountain, John Bull and Hollcomb Creek. Being my second time doing 'real off roading' I was got stuck again within the first 5-10min and got the strap :( but that's ok... bc the rest of the trip I only had to use the winch once... Second day we did Dish Pan

Mark, Brad and Pete were great spotters for me and helped me get through quite a few hard spots.

So.... my little report.

The Oxnard Chapter started from Ventura... Ryan was a no show, but finally get his junk going and caught up with us near the bottom of the hill. We later met up with the SGV boys at the DISCO center (I checked, but there was no Kool and the Gang records being sold?). Soon thereafter.... we hit Gold Mountain. GM isn't much, but it's a nice little trail to start off with, get your bearings, and of course, there are some beautiful views of the lake from that trail. From there, we headed over to John Bull. JB used to be harder, I think. Although, one or two sections did seem worse than before (both winch pulls occurred on the same spot I have seen stock Land Rovers go through). And from there.... Holcomb.

Holcomb was the big draw for me... it's been closed for sometime due to fires and my understanding was that it was the hardest trail in BB. Well... it wasn't really bad at all. There were two or there fun sections.... but, a massive amount of beautiful views! And that is with it being burned out.... I can't begin to imagine how pretty it would have been before the fires.

Then it was on to the camp ground. The SGV boys rolled in with us and had a few cold ones before they headed out.... we enjoyed each others company and met some other wheelers in the camp site. The campsite sucked monkey balls.... we had Compton on one side, East LA on the other.... both were hell bent on seeing who could be more annoying... screaming nonsense til about 4:30am.... SUCKED! So... payback occurred at 5:15am. I got up and started singing as loud as I could how beautiful a day it was.... first peep out of the getho next door, was answered with a you kept me up all night night owl.... now it's the early birds turn. Within an hour... the 20+ people were up, packed, and gone! Weird!!

We spent too much time talking with the guy that ran the place (nice guy... I just wanted to be on the trail before 9am... not after noon). We did Dishpan and then stopped at Deep Creek to bath and enjoy the water and sun for a bit. When we got back to the heeps, we all had FS tickets. Adventure Pass bullshit. After that... seeing we were all kind of tired, not getting much sleep, we rolled down the mountain and had the traditional pizza after wheeling at a great place I know of in the SFV (Stonefire if you're interested).

Only carnage I know of is the big ass rock Tilly pounded into pieces, a ripped off flare, and a bent shock.

My only damage was the fender flare blowing off... muffler being pushed and bent up... slider bending my pan (can still open door but it rubs) and a broken shock rod. All in all, better than BC109!
