Sierras in the summer.....desert in the winter.
Places to camp in the mountains, that isn't Big Bear:
Locally, to Bakersfield, there's the Lake Isabella area, run The Black Gulch trail system. Freeway Ridge, Borderline, Black Gulch, camp in Lake Isabella or at Evans Flat.
North east of Lake Isabella is Sherman Trail and Monache Meadow, which is a pretty good weekend trip. Run Sherman on the way to Monache, and camp in Monache Meadow.
In the Shaver Lake area there is Swamp Lake Trail, Brewer Lake Trail, Red Lake/Coyote Lake Trail, Mirror Lake Trail, Strawberry/West Lake Trail, Bald Mountain Trail, and Dusy-Ershim Trail. You can camp on the trails, or you can set up a main camp and run the trails as day runs (except Dusy, but you can run part way in and back out in a day).
BTW, the Sierras are quite a bit prettier than the SB Mountains. If you like BB, you'll love the Sierras.
There is still plenty of time to plan a trip to the mountains this year, most of the trails just opened up within the last couple of weeks, and Swamp and Dusy won't open until this coming weekend. I'd be happy to help with directions if anyone wants to put together a weekend trip in Sept. I can't go myself, though I'd like to, I have a race car to build in the next 6 weeks.
Death Valley and Mojave Road, and Last Chance Canyon, are better a little later in the year.
Been to Last Chance many times, it's a nice place to go, and you can also run Nightmare Canyon if you pick the right weekend.
