LOL, backdoor used to be pretty scary, but Ive seen 3 4-door JKs do it now so I think I might be ready to give it a shot after my stretch.

To get this thread back on track.....

Jackhammer is the tentative plan for IOR run on saturday.

Plan so far is myself, roger, roger's wife to be taking our rigs on this trail. Neither of us have ran it before so should be good fun, from what I know its one of the "original" hammer trails and should be doable by our group of 33-37" tire crew with lockers and maybe some winch/strap action if needed.

Trail lead will either be me/roger, whoever feels more froggy saturday morning.

Richard also mentioned there is a sightseeing jaunt out to Giant Rock for the near stock rigs or people that just want to take a relaxing drive through the desert.

Matt, 33" tires are a no-go on that trail IMHO. Claw hammer, big Johnson, and maybe aftershock should be doable on 33s, but I wouldn't do Jack on anything less than 35s with lockers at both ends - and you will still need help through several spots. Also be mindful that there is a spot on Jack that tends to do body damage to full-body rigs that are a little wide or too long in wheel-base. And it gets pretty damn off-camber on the ridge. I think Jack is the hardest of the original Hammer trails.

I'm posting this in both threads for folks who haven't been there before.

The best way to get there is to go Hwy 58 to Barstow. When the 58 hits the 15 go north on 15 into Barstow a few miles and exit on Barstow Rd. Go right, or south, on Barstow Rd for about 30 miles to the stop sign in Lucerne. Turn left at the stop sign (go right for a block if you need to top off your gas tank), which is Hwy 247/Old Woman Springs Rd, and go east for 22 miles to Boone Rd. There is a brown BLM sign on the right side of the road that says OHV area and Boone Rd. There is a long straight section of road before you get to Boone Rd, if you hit a curve to the right after 23 miles from the stop sign you just missed Boone Rd.

Turn left on Boone Rd and go about 4 miles to the dry lake bed. From the highway, Boone Rd will veer left a few miles down, then you cross a short bridge over a wash, then another mile or so to the lake bed. Boone Rd is gravel and dirt and it can be rough, take your time with an RV. Our camp will be to the left on the lake bed, look for the largest group of RV's and 4x4's out there. I have a brown and white F350 with a Lance camper, and I'll be camped next to a couple large white toy haulers.

One word of warning to everyone. The lake bed has bomb craters, and you don't want to hit them at speed, it will ruin your day. Most of the bomb craters are on the right side of the lake bed, but there is a small one on the left side around where we camp. Just don't go fast on the lake bed unless you know exactly where you're going.

To me, Jackhammer is toned down quite a bit from what it used to be, but it still would be a virtually guaranteed winching with 33" tires. If you have a small group, and are willing to be patient and take your time, and you want a thrill, Jackhammer might be OK. If everyone has 35's, then you're OK, but you still might have to winch one spot depending on your luck and skill.

One thing to remember is that JV can eat stock front axle shafts on all but the easiest trails. Be sure to carry spares. Careful and thoughtful driving can keep you from popping a shaft, and some luck. Be sure to climb rocks and ledges with your tires pointed straight ahead, climb straight, then turn. And watch the throttle. Better to winch and keep having fun than to bounce and spend the afternoon fixing broken parts.

- I'd def. recommend Jack North, Turkey Claw, or Clawhammer for the guys with 33"-35" tires for the first run. Than decide if you want to do Jack after those trails!

- What time are you guys going out on Saturday??? I want to get there before you guys go out and have time to setup camp.

Yeah, if the group has folks on 33's, and a couple of you are tired of running Claw, Jack North is a pretty good choice. I like that trail, going both up and down. You'd still head over to the mailbox on Sledge and go up the rest of Sledge.
