Which winch should I get?

Postby Loki XJ » January 3rd, 2012, 9:13 pm

So I was looking at the smittybilt XRC8 it's waterproof brother and the mile marker 8000 winch... The xrc8 is 299 it's h20 brother is 399 and mile marker is 329 (unless a vender can get me a better deal) anyway what I'm after is a low profile winch I can tuck tight in the bumper I plan to build.

What I wanna know is cause it will seldom ever be used, should I spend the extra $$ on a waterproof one or will a normal one be fine? Also aside from the obvious(high amp alt) What will work best in supplying my winch with the needed amperage? Will a secondary battery help much?

Save up an extra $100 and get the Warn 8000. Shittybuilt sucks, seems like one fails on every trip.

if i can get it from richard at G&G for the price he had it on sale for at the october meet and greet (i wouldnt frown on a better deal either :Thumb: lol ) i'd be happy to buy it from him. i'd be happy supporting a local dealer vs buying online, i didnt even know it was on sale or i would of got it then. but having a sale price seeing it and getting charged more kind of bothers me a little bit

We had the Warn winch on sale for a while for $399, because Warn had an $80 rebate going on as an intro offer on the new winch, trying to compete with the Chinese winches. The VR8000 is currently $479. I can't compete with cheap internet pricing and also have a building, insurance, and real people to talk to, rather than a website with drop shipping working from my house. Can't argue with saving money, that's just the way it is. We do have the VR8000 in stock.

I had and sold a few of the Smittybuilt winches, but sent the last one I had back and won't sell anymore. A good winch can last longer than your Jeep, and is a good investment.

:yup: My Warn is on its 2nd Jeep. If it ever gets destroyed beyond rebuilding It will be replaceed with a Warn. They are extremely pricey but worth it for what they do IMO.

Warn makes great stuff, but the Mile Marker is just as good IMO. I've only used their hydro winches, but very good stuff. I run and have run SuperWinch for many years over many vehicles. I have always been impressed with their stuff, but noticed within the last few years their prices have started to match the over priced Warn stuff. I would have ALWAYS recommended SuperWinch over Warn, but with the prices coming in near one another, look at features.

everyone will always say smittybuilt sucks. I had one for a while and never had an issue with it. It was a bit slower but i used it quite a bit and not once did it over heat, i had it submerged in muddy water and it still worked. I also managed to use it to pull henrys subburban side ways up a hill to get around the gate on rancheria (bent the crap out of my bumper doing so but the winch was perfectly fine).

If i get another winch, personally for me you cant beat the xrc-8. I would glady get another one.
