need help / opinion

Postby chrisrigby » April 9th, 2012, 6:04 pm

i have a corporate 14 that im trading off to a guy for a dana 30 and 35 front and rear end. my plan was to change the front tubes around so it was a passanger side diff (keeping stock deminsions so standard non custom parts are still useable) and run them under my tracker. i plan to do at least a locker front and rear but possably a spool in the rear. so what my question is can you make them as strong as an equally prepped toyota axle? or am i farting in the breeze with this idea? ilso is there any 30 or 35s that have issues that it should watch out for? pretty sure they are out of an early 80s jeep but not 100% sure.

P.S. more than likley a 33 inch tire will be used under the tracker on this with the slight possability of 35s down the road. anythings gotta be better than the IFS and little suzi rear lol.

Hell no dont do it !!!!!! :owned: you are crazy if you want a 30 front end! go with toyota in that rig they can be made way stronger . im running 40' on mine and im not very nice to it to say the least and if i had a 30 i would be held back! DO NOT DO IT!!go with toyota in the tracker i have them in a sami and i havent had any problems that i didnt bring on my self! but another thought is to take the 14 bolt and make a steer axle with it and then another in the back and the WOW factor will be there! :wings: how much do you want for the 14 bolt ? is it the big tube axle or the other? i want it! But on the other hand that is just my opinion! but i have definitely tested the toyota axles and i cant believe i have had such good luck! :lol2: if you dont believe me just ask how hard i am on my rig and no POP yet! Do you still want to change that motor out i want the 1.6 if you do please!

that was my original plan with the 14 bolt but its crazy wide for the street and i have no experiance with ordering shafts fopr somthing narrowed so out of fear of ordering the wrong stuff because moneys so damn tight in my house i avoided the idea. any idea the cost overall with building a 14bolt sterer?

funny you should ask about the 1.6 pick your part has a really good looking possably fresh rebuild 16 valve MFI motor in a purple 4 door kick the intake and stuff is spray painted to make it look clean wich kinda threw me at first but there is seriously NO oil or any buildup on the block head valvecover or pan. i was gonna go back and pull plugs and pan and see how it looks inside. definatly worth a look ive robbed the MAF off of it and thats all thats missing mechanical wise if you go to the center row that seperates the american from import its about 15 rows back and about 6 cars in.

yeah i caught that episode long ago. im willing to bet it would cost a boat load. which sucks because im on support wife and 2 kids work on tracker with left overs type budget lol thats why i was asking about the dana 30s since i have one rather than trying to locate toyotas and build them

Unless you plan on puting a v8 in the tracker :lol3: The 14 bolt is wayyy more than you will ever need! Dana 30's have been pushing 35's around for decades

Stay away from that D35 especially. Those are the WORST and WEAKEST axles ever placed under a vehicle. Over the years, D35s have been the #1 trail failure I have seen, and when they break you are SOL in the worst way. Pass on this trade. Don't give up a treasure you don't need for a piece of crap you will regret getting.

Most people end up just recycling those axles for scrap metal because nobody wants them.

33-35" in tracker and need passenger drop axles?

get wagoneer d44's from junkyard, saw a set a month or so ago. pass drop d44, can be made to hand 36-37" tires if needed future.

or as josh suggested toyota axles. The yota axles would be about the best starting point for a lightweight rig.

the d30/d35 would not be a good choice, the d30 is drivers drop by the time someone changes it over to pass drop they would wish they didnt bother,

actually i was going to do the tube swap but now definatly rethinking it all lol glad there was alot of input on the question thanks fellas

as far as a V8 goes not so much but definatly a V6 will be in it hopfully by the end of summer.

as far as the super overkill axles go thats kind of what im aiming for. i tend to have a really bad habit of going wheeling and doing really dumb things by myself well outside of cell phone range. i would rather be over built and under powered and make it home (usually) that the other way around. plus i am eventually hoping to have a high low box infront my my TC for double low range which as common snese tells me is going to have the potential to twist the shit out of stuff with very little power from the motor

any other ideas i maybe have overlooked would be great thanks in advance

Toyota axles are dirt cheap. I paid $200 for my front and rear out of a 82 p/u. Lots of parts available to make disc brakes too.
