Name that tune- drivetrain noise

Postby EJ21 » June 4th, 2012, 9:17 am

Jeep recently started making a noise like a baseball card in spoke tires on a bicycle. I first thought it was u-joint going bad but when i crawled under everything seemed tight and i greased them with no change. Sound is only present when there is a load on the drivelines. If i let off gas or put in clutch it seems to go away. I noticed this weekend that it doesn't make the noise at all in 4th gear. 1-3 building noise, nothing in 4th, then sounds like crap again in 5th. Any thoughts/ideas much appreciated.

I'd have to hear it personally, but sounds like transmission or t-case. Does it change if you shift into 4x4?

Transmission!!
No sound in 4th because it is 1-1 ratio and everything is in synk(Richard taught me that)

EJ, let's diagnose it for sure first, then find a used ax-15 or Cherokee auto to replace it. It's an easy swap u can do in a driveway in a few hours.

EJ, go by Matt's. (Lake v2) if you haven't already. He is more knowledgeable than I am and can help you decide on the route to go with the trans. For the cost of a rebuild kit, you can get an AX-15 that somebody has removed and put it in. The 15 is stronger than the 5 and will probably outlast your Jeep

Will be looking for an AX5 if anyone has one laying around.

That's normal wear and tear. Now when you trans mechanic says "I've been rebuilding trannys for 35 years and have never seen anyone break this part." That's when you know you've gone above and beyond the bounds of your transmission.

haha. Yeah, guess could have been worse. Still costing as much as new trans almost though. Wish could have found a used one.

That's really not bad my dodge costs about $1800 twice now. Never buying a dodge pick up with an auto ever again.

Not bad, but just got better! $950 out the door for everything. Will be nice to get it back and everything underneath being freshly rebuilt. Motor was already done.

I have had that same issue with Dodge before. trans and rear end always gave me problems.
