If you went on a run this is where to brag about it!

Rubicon trail pix, 9/1-9/3 Labor Day Weekend

Postby Phimosis » September 5th, 2012, 3:22 am

This was a clean cut, successful run from Wentworth Spings to Tahoe City. The biggest trail fail was a bent cross member that took out the boot on my stock JK front driveshaft. Other than that, we both got broken licence plate frames, but no other body damage or mechanical failures.

Updated and now with 170 pix! I still need to do captions for a lot of them.

James had to work on Saturday, so we left Bakersfield at 7pm on a Saturday night.

After hitting a big rock on Post Pile, it bent my cross member up into my front drive shaft and took out the boot. We removed the cross member, placed it between two trees, and applied gentle winching until it drug my jeep a few feet.

Chunk of granite I removed when bending my cross member. Technically it's not a cross member, but a wimpy stock skid bar that partly protects the transmission oil pan and exhaust cross over. I received my Evo Offroad skid plates a few days before this run and had time to install the engine and tranmission oil pans, but didn't have time to finish the job by installing the exhaust cross over skid. :-(

If you're curious, the tyres are Simex Extreme Trekkers.

Thanks! This is only about half of them. I ran out of time last night,
But wanted to post them in a timely fashion. More to come tonight...

Looks like you guys had a good time.

What's with the heavy construction equipment.... Do you know what they were doing? Looking pretty grim as i see it. Hopefully you can tell me I am way off.

They are repairing the heavily eroded sections by adding 6-12" sluice rock as "pavers". Friends of the Rubicon argues that people were making their own bypasses around the heavily eroded sections, which damages the pristine nature of the wilderness around the trail. In their defense, they also add sections with 24-60" boulders at choke points to make the trail challenging and to keep stock vehicles out. I had to drag James (76foxx) out of their manmade obstacles 2 or 3 times because his 33" tires just weren't enough.

To me, it makes sense to do what they are doing because of the sheer number of people that go to that trail. It's a little dissapointing because it gives some sections an SVRA feel to it, but the majority of sections are still wild and hairy.
