Yellar is smogged and tagged. look for it rumbling down the road very soon.

Also bought a warn 9.5ti winch, bestop element doors with enclosures, softopper, rampage TJ upper doors, and gears are ready to go in. Basically just need to hook up gauges and stretch the front shaft.

UPDATE:

I got the oil pressure gauge working, voltage gauge working, fuel gauge is getting power but pegged at "past full" and the sender is new, so I must have done something wrong with wiring. Temp gauge isn't working yet, and I haven't hooked up the tach either.

The 46RH shifts by input from the speed sensor on the trans. Instead of putting an electronic sensor in, and electronic speedo, I'll just shift it manually for now. I still won't have to deal with a clutch.

I ordered a Warn 9.5ti winch today, now looking for a cool bumper with winch plate.

I got the Bestop Element doors on. They look cool, but do not come with the mirrors that are shown in the picture. I'll probably get the kind that bolt onto the side of the windshield frame.

I got to drive it a little today. Got it up to 65 on White Lane. Runs pretty smooth, no death wobble. No track bars, sway bars or even front shocks on it yet...and it drives better than the 90 YJ that I have here now. I melted the vacuum engagement system for the front end on the exhaust, so a Posi-Lok is going in.

Bottom line is, I'm 90% there. She runs, drives and sounds mean as hell. I have the wiring all cleaned up under the hood. I'm waiting for my softopper, and upper doors. I have to modify the T-case shifter to work in its new spot and put some carpet in to cover the place where the t-case shifter used to come through. I'll have it at the next meet n greet if anybody wants to see how it came out.

Got the Warn 9.5cti mounted on a Shmittybilt winch plate and bumper. I don't like to buy Chinese, but they had a bumper that I feel looked best and fit my needs best, and the winch plate was for looks and convenience.

Also bought an Optima Red Top from 4wp, as well as all the stuff to hook up my CB.

I got the old t-case shifter hole covered with a gray, carpeted floor mat, cut to fit, and screwed in place. It is more rigid than just carpet alone and helps keep the exhaust from coming into the cab any worse than it already does.

I have the family cage in, but am going to go back to lap belts for the rear seat because the seatbelts interfere with my storage box for the back (came from a sport cage YJ). Also got a sound bar today from Ortech off of here. It should help me be able to hear the radio over the v8 and single chamber flowmaster.

She is coming along nicely and will be in the Vets Day parade! Here is a shot of the winch, plate and bumper.

On your gas gauge problem, if you still have that problem. Make sure the ohms match for gauge and sender. I can't see you wiring this whole damn jeep up, and getting it right just to miswire a gas gauge.

Travis, either the ohms don't match or it is a grounding issue. Seems like when it gets to the bottom 1/2 of the tank, it works right....weird

My autometer is maxing out as well. Will have to do some testing to see what is going on.

I installed a set of TJ flares. I had to trim about 2" off the front fender and 3" off of the rear but it looks ok. Eventually I plan to buy or build tube fenders, but the flares will do for now.

I also got the 4.10 gears in back and the front driveshaft stretched with bigger tube. I'll put new joints and straps on it before putting it on. It's getting closer and closer to the trail.

Progress made the last couple days....

Got the front axle swap done, now my front D30 matches my Ford 8.8 rear diff. Apparently, the D30 in an 87 with 6 cyl is different than a 91 with 4 cyl. I had to buy new brake pads, rotors and calipers (the ones that came with the axle were shot)

Cut the skid plate a little to clear the front shaft, all is good.

Got the Posi-loc on and adjusted to work properly, I think.

Took the very bottom leaf out of each front spring. 4 leaves front and rear now.

Replaced plugs, wires, cap, rotor and TPS sensor, cleaned the IAC valve.

No more misfire at low Rpms or idle.

I now have 4wd and am considering welding the spiders in front. When in 4 hi, only the left front would turn until I engage the Posi-loc to lock in the right side. Downside is that the front driveshaft would turn full time. Maybe a lunchbox locker later would be a better idea.

Anyway, my v8 jeep is 4x4 now. I'm looking forward to playing in it a bit.

Nice job Zak,

I ran into the front axle differences before when i pulled the 87 axle out of mine and put in a 93, had to swap a couple things to match up on brakes as well.

All that torque, big tires, and a D30 with a c-clipped 8.8! thangs is gonna go bang-pop! Score some junkyard tons for that beast. I wouldn't dump any more cash into those axles (talking from experience).

Man, you scored a nice engine. That is exactly what I want to put in my buggy. When that thing is done, you are going to fly up waterfalls. You did an awesome job of working the bugs out and getting it legal. Ill be hitting you up for advise when I do mine.

Legal is a very vague term when applied to this jeep.

As far as axles, I'm going to take your advice on that, although I may throw a lunchbox locker in front. The LSD in the 8.8 works pretty well for now and is street friendly. And this thing is no crawler, just a moderate trail rig.

It's not too tough to get running, just get a 95 or older (OBD1) system and get the fuse block and all under hood harness. Just 5 power wires and you're good to go. I'm happy with it. I don't think I have 5k in this whole jeep including winch and such.

After a year of driving it on 35's and never breaking anything, I put a set of 33's on it so that I can swap on some new-to-me 35" TSL's and I broke an axle shaft. 5 mins on 33's and the driver front snapped at the U-joint. It has been making a squealing noise for a while that I couldn't quite find and I think it may have been the u-joint running without grease.

Went to the pick n pull yesterday and got 2 driver side shafts with bearings and a passenger side shaft that is non-disco for a spare also. She's all fixed now.

John, I'm interested in your 5.3 swap. Once the JK is paid for, it's getting a v8 and some other mods. There is just no substitute for HP in a jeep.

The basic swap was not too bad, I was able to place the engine, trans, and transfer all in by myself. The wiring, and all the emissions equipment, and the associated wiring has been the hard part. I have a LONG list of resources that I'm more than happy to share and help if needed. I would like a JKU with a v-8 as well! I wouldn't mind finding a 07 Rubi for the swap. I'm hoping to make it to the Feb M&G if I'm not out of town.

I plan to buy a harness from one of the custom places. I did all the wiring on my 318 but the 5.3 is much more modern. I want plug n play and good looks. It 'll be worth the $$.
