Bought this 05 TJ last year and got the itch. I now have 33" mud tires 4" suspension and 1" body lift. Up next 4.10 ring and pinions and maybe a limited slip in the rear.

Why stop at 4.10s? Especially if you have the bug you're going to want more further on down the road. 4.10s allow no room for growth and are barely enough for 33s. I went down that road, and am finally about to get out of the 4.10 curse.

4.10s on that motor should be good for 33s.

But Travis is right... if you plan on going bigger, 4.10s will not be sufficient and you will have to move to a lower gear. Travis.... do you know how 33s feel with 4.56s or even 4.88s at highways speeds (assume this is a daily driver)?

Richard's xj has 4.88s and 33s. I've driven it once to see the difference between my 4.10s and his. Lots more off the line and it was around 2750rpm at highway speeds. It seemed absolutely perfect.

I am actually trying to get it back to stockish gear ratios. With it's current 3.73s it is ok on flat land but going to Tehachapi it falls on its face. (slow lane with trucks looking for the right gear :cry: )

Taching a little high for my pleasure, but not so much that I'd have any issue with.... hell, when I am towing I am usually running around 3-3.5k as it seems the truck is happiest there.... while it feels like it's not quite right, I know it is well within the specs of the motor to run there all day long.

Of course the around town driving will be more spirited.... I worry about those little tires at highway speeds and it looks like you have shot that issue down.

@VIC: I'd do lower gears.... between Travis' experience and the room to go up a tire size, it seems like a winner. If you never plan on upgrading the tire size, the 4.10s are fine..... BUT, beware.... most of us have been bitten by the "I am done" bug, only to realize that isn't what the spot seems to be about. lol

I'm sure when I go to 4.88s mine will still fall on its face up the grade. You've added a lot of rotating weight to the powertrain. Most of our jeeps can't hold 65-70 up the grades. More gear helps, but you'll still be taxing the engine and trans to get it to speed and keep it there.

I think this will be more of a daily driver / family vehicle. I know, I know.... Why have a Jeep? Answer because its a Jeep! So if I were gonna do heavy trails a trip to the junk yard for parts to build a trail rig would be my ideal rig. I am looking forward to seeing you guys at Chuy's soon. :drinks:

Dont bother with a limited slip in rear, they wont make a difference.

Put a locker up front and leave rear open to start with if not going on crazy trails

With a locker up front in rocks it takes some gnarly spots for you to realize that you have a need for a rear locker

I never understood the whole locker up front before rear. It doesn't make sense to me to put a locker on the weaker axle first, and the fact that we're usually going up rocks doesn't help my stance on this arguement. It's simple. You're lightening the front while trying to pull the rest of the jeep up with the locked front axle which is more prone to breaking.

Why do you choose front first Matt?

When all the weight is on the rear tires, the wheels have plenty of traction already so a locker isnt needed as much. Locker is needed when one tire cant find any resistnace or traction and thats usually the front, going up hills.

Ive played around with my elockers when they were working and the front in my experience has always been a hell of a lot more useful then the rear.

Good luck on the gears. I haven't tried those on my own.

Another observation on locker up front is wich axle is climbing bersus pushing. When aproaching or starting obstacle with just a rear locker the front of the jeep is being pushed into the face of the obstacle. When the rear is pushing the front can easily be pushed off line.

With a locker up front when starting an obstacle the front will climb the obstacle, then when the weight is transfered to the rear as frylock stated the rear will have plenty of traction to continue

And also it just plain works, its also been argued that steering with a front locked and open rear is easier, there is a large majority of comp guys that run full locker in front and selectable in rear

I agree on the locker issue, I started with a factory limited slip in the rear and a Detroit locker in the front. It was a great combo. I did break a front u-joint on the Rubicon with that setup but it was measly fixed with spares and that was the only problem I had. I was on 33s at the time with 3.73 gears.

As for the gear issue, I would have gone with 4.56. I am running 4.88s with 35s now and I have no problem maintaining 80mph up a grade.

Looks like a decent price, you might want to call Polyperformance or Northridge or even 4wheelparts to see if they can beat it. Id also PM Richard (Goatman) here on the forum.

Pulled the trigger on these gears. Up next lockers and getting them all set up and installed. Should be done by the end of December.

Ok, put 4.56's with duratracs front and rear. Now the break in period starts. Regained the lost power from the stock gears and 33's. Waiting for my new speedo gear to come in and will install it to get my speedo closer to actual speed being driven.
