Annual Swamp Lake trip 2013

Postby Goatman » April 22nd, 2013, 9:54 pm

We're looking at the last weekend in July for Swamp Lake trail this year, which would be July 26-28. Leave from Dinky Creek Fri morning, camp Fri and Sat nights at the lake, finish the trail on Sun. Great trail, great scenery, great campsite. Who's going?

I'll post up directions and stuff when it gets closer.

I went back in time to find your answer. A JKUR did it with a small 3" lift and stock tires. The tie rod was bent after the trail but he made it. I did it without any lockers last year on 35" tires and 5 1/2" lift. I drug my rock sliders in a few spots. Perhaps because I was following Chris's line. We had a few times in which my no locker was a small problem, and I ran over my rear brake line. Aaron broke a front short shaft.

33s, a locker, rock sliders, front & rear attachment points, and a rig in great running condition.

Also bring bring spare parts. If you don't have chromoly shafts, be prepared to handle broken ones. If you have a D35 in the rear, be prepared to deal with that. Spare u-joints, spare fluids, tire repair kit and compressor, spare brake lines, spare belts, spare high-pressure steering line, and your own tools should get you by.

This trail is very remote - more remote than the Rubicon. If your shit breaks bad, it will be left on the side of the trail until we can get a recovery crew out there the next week. So if your rig is running bad, overheating, or having problems - it is best not to attend this run

Although this trail is not too difficult, it is VERY off-camber in sections. Keep the weight as low as possible. Loading heavy stuff on a roof may cause you to flop.

A stock JKUR with a 2.5" lift made it through on our second trip to swamp last year, but a stock JKUR has 32" MT tires, D44s, Lockers, Sliders, Skids, and a 4:1 case. He bent his tie rod and did a little body damage. Aldo is also a very good driver.

Basically, prepare for this run just like you would for the Rubicon.

did you almost flop last year? There we a couple near-flops in our group last year coming down the switchbacks on the north face of the mountain.

I flopped over but bounced off a tree and broke the mounts on the roof rack.

I think Bigfoot made it through without his air locker working and Travis wasnt locked. Not saying it wouldnt have helped though.

Without sliders your rockers will be beat badly. There is a lot of rock crawling on this trail. Not huge rocks, but big enough to need lockers, or big tires and good driving, or a strap. Like Chris said, this trail is remote, so you have to be self sufficient. This isn't the place for a rig that is not up to the task, or not well maintained. The idea is to enjoy the wheeling and the scenery on the trail, and get to the lake and relax. While trail repairs are inevitable, they should not be considered normal or expected. If you are reasonably prepared, this is a very fun trail and a very nice camping spot at the lake.

Only thing I'm lacking on is sliders. Lockers front and rear. May just need to make some this next few weekends

Would you say my rig would be capable?
