I need gears badly in my Rubicon. Driving up hill or any other small incline really drives me bonkers with having to kick down a gear all the time. I'm sure my slush box loves it, too.

I already know I am going to go with 5.13's, but I need to find a local Bakersfield shop that is highly recommended that won't charge me both my legs.

I found a shop in Fresno that will do them for $1100 parts and labor and that's a good price to me. The only issue is that it's so far away.

Any recommendations for a Bakersfield shop?

I am going to put a few trips on my current setup before I pull the trigger for gears, but as always G&G is local and club member but I have not priced out to see what He will do it for.

There is 4 wheel parts who gives our club a break on pricing and if I am not mistaken $1000-$1300 is the going rate for gears no matter where.

remember too if you take it somewhere they will more than likely need it for at least 2 days, I remember you saying its your DD as is mine so I know the hassle.

Also a few more would be:

Shocker Motorsports
Performance offroad

Those are the only ones that I have heard of people going to so that will give you a good start for your pricing search.

Check the following:

* G&G Off-Road
* 4Wheel Parts (make sure you DEMAND that only Tony do them. May be the best gear guy in town)
* Pat at Shocker Motorsports

Those are the only 3 I would trust to do a good job and stand behind their work.

I prefer Motive Gears for all off-road applications and am convinced that they are the best balance between tough as nails on the trail, and smooth on the street. Most of the KOH guys run motive. G&G also stands behind the Motive brand for customers that really beat on their rigs. But you will save a couple hundred running G2s (although I broke a couple set of those in my JK).

Does anyone here know how to properly set up gears? This is my DD so I need them set up correctly. I found a damn good deal on front and rear gears with master install kits for under $600. I could pay you in beer/food/a little bit of cash.

Plus, you get the satisfaction of knowing you have a parts and labor warranty. You ain't gonna get that in someone's garage.

Setting up gears is not rocket science, I could easily do it if I had to. The problem is that being a "little" off leads to "big" problems. No two set-ups are exactly the same, so their is a little bit of educated guessing involved. Also, no set-up is exactly perfect so the installer has to attempt to get reasonably close considering all factors of the install. I have seen countless home gear jobs go south in this club, leading to damaged gears and lockers. IMO, its worth it to have a pro do it and stand behind their work with their wallet.

I agree with chis and brad partly, a garage set up gears usually isnt that far off from shop rates if the installer has done enough they usually charge for their experience, secondly a garage installer wont warranty damage that happens to oyher parts if install is bad

I do gears from time to time but in the garage its no warranty because i cant afford a 2k mistake.

On my jeep i actually had tony do them at shop because i knew i ws going to beat on the axles and wanted piece of mind should something break

Subnote ive never had a comeback on any gearsets ive installed which is quite a few now.

I was gonna do my own. After reading up on it a bit I decided to have a shop do my DD and when I do a build I will do it myself.

I have R&H transmission do all my gear work Its a one man shop and the guy really knows his shit. he has set up a lot of difs for me and I have never had a problem. nick is the owner give him a call 661-834-7130

Another suggestion.... at least to look into.

Josh sent me over to Performance Industries to get my drive lines lengthened since I was having an issue with Coast (one of convenience, nothing else). I am not sure of the final product as I didn't see them before I ran out of town this time around, but they followed up and were pretty helpful with my questions. They seemed pretty good and didn't try and upsell me anything I really didn't need. I know Coast is shady there... they will try and RnR your shaft at almost the cost of a new one.

A lot of club members have been having problems with the quality and pricing of Performance, including Josh and myself.

Zak, CJNewbie, Flyloco, monepit, and myself were quoted one price, then charged a significantly higher price when we picked them up. Every shaft I have bought has been more expensive than my JE Reels built out of 1/4" wall tube.

CColston got 2 drivelines from them that were bent from the shop!

The rear one in Bigfoot's Jeep grenade on the street with a few hundred miles on it. The rear in Victoria's jeep broke on BC109.

AJ99 liked them for a while, but ended up having problems with his.

I make my driveshafts at home. No vibes at 70 mph, but I needed thicker tubing to handle 35x13.50's, 10 psi, v8, 4LO and rocks. It did fine on just dirt trails though. Any decent welder can build a straight shaft with square ends, but for the high angle stuff, use the pros. [attachment=0]ImageUploadedByTapatalk1373522211.800951.jpg[/attachment]
