Red and Coyote Lake Trails 6/23/13

Wow thanks for the invite Jeff/Garbageman. Had a great time. One of the prettiest and toughest trails Ive been on yet.

Recap:
Woke up Sunday morning to a nice 39 degrees. Met up with garbage man and proceeded to the trail head. Hit the Red Lake trailhead around 9:30 after I got us lost looking for it. The signage in the area is lacking. Ran into Red Lake, the trail was rougher than I remember but we had no problems. Didnt stop at Red Lake, proceeded straight to the Gate Keeper on Coyote. Made it through and ran the rest of the trail with only one minor rock stacking incident (I have no idea how I ended up stuck on that SOB but I was hung up good) and a bent swaybar link. I managed to fold over one of my swaybar links so I had to go aheead and manually disconnect. Of course the one time I got hung up 5 Jeeps came down the trail from the other direction to observe my fail.

Got to Coyote Lake around noon. We hung out for a couple hours. While there I went ahead and completely removed the links as I was still getting a little rub when flexed out. I beat the bent one strait enought to work with my BFH. I need to figure out where to tie them off so they are out of the way.

Left Coyote around 2 and got to the Snow Park (I like it cause its paved and you dont have to lay in the dirt to work on your vehicle) on the 168 around 6. We aired up and did a once over on the vehicles. I got my sway bar reconected. We checked the alighnment on Garbagemans Jeep cause I saw him whack it pretty hard and it was towed out a full inch. We got that adjusted and headed home.

I'm sure they have been there before If they all had Jeeps! Its a Jeep thing!

Yep, thats a fun little trail wih some cool bonus obstacles. Last year, there was a few full-size Dodge RAMs back there when we camped . Also a good lake to swim/fish in when you get out past the mud. You guys probably went at a good time of year too, in August that place is PACKED and a good campsite is hard to find.

I was hoping to have all of the parts in for my Jeep by Friday so I could meet you guys up there on Sunday, but it didn't happen.

Was kind of surprised how few people we saw. There were a couple Toyotas and a built Willys pickup camped at Red Lake. There was a guy in a built Willys CJ2 Stretched like 18" running 42"s that kind of followed us to Coyote. There was no one at Coyote when we got there. Last time I did Red Lake was early August and it was like 5 o'clock on the I405. The mosquitos were really bad though, take repellant if you go.

I'll post up pics as soon as I find the cable for my camera. Jeff had out the Go-Pro so hopefully he'll have some good stuff.

Full sized RAMs? Man Id liked to have seen that. I dragged roof on a tree coming out.

Nice, you can see where I cammed over the swaybar link in that picture on the gatekeeper. Man the rocks never look as big in pictures. Did you talk to anyone on your front end yet Jeff?

I have a shop that has a frame jig for 18 wheelers. They are going to fix it for free! I just need to get it down there. I am lacking motivation to wrench on it. Im just starting to get it going again.

You picked a good weekend to go. Clovis Independents were having their annual Moonlight Madness Run. 150 to 200 rigs were up there on Bald Mountain. Usually you might have to wait for more than an hour to get through the sluice box after Red Lake. We went on opening day the weekend before and the mosquitoes were extra thick, but the trail was fun. Went in my friends new Rubicon who hadn't driven it since 1988 in an 86 Nissan Hardbody. He couldn't believe how much it had changed.

so i took my jeep back to bakersfield frame and axel, since it was leaking oil out right next to the pumpkin,and they confirmed that i did break the axel tube from the pumpkin. so its back to the drawing board.

I wonder if you could just drill out the welds and replace the tubes? You might be able to build better castor into it at the same time.

V it out and weld it. Truss the top side if there is room. It is already leaking so if that doesn't fix it you are no worse off. I'm into Toyota's, but I think all Dana tubes are pressed in then welded so if you stop the leak you'll be fine.

You really need to see it in person to believe it. Started off as his grandfathers hunting jeep. He did everything but paint and powdercoating. He even fabricated the headers for more clearance. The sliders started out as flat stainless steel.
I'm trying to get him to do Swamp Lake when the Trailblazer go.
