not hand held
Handheld can be done for cheap.... less than 50 I think. A mobile is a better option since you'll get to use a much better antenna... the power is also greater, but in our application, not as important as a good antenna with a good ground plane. A mobile is also easier to use.

A little more cash would get you a dual band radio.... not something you need, but the nice thing is you'll get to talk to those FRS/GMRS radios if you like.

We can get you going for under 200. Is that in your budget? That would get you a Yaesu (1900 or 2900) or Kenwood (281) radio, antenna, and cable (similar to what I pointed Matt at). Install will only take a couple of hours (routing cable cleanly). If it's too much, I can look at other options for you.

If I can't find something in your price range, you could always do a handheld and run it to a mobile antenna and run a hand mic. I'm guessing you'll be in for just around a hundred on that.

Also... getting a ham license isn't too hard (well... if you aren't like someone I know that went to take without studying at all, you should be good). It's not exactly necessary for our application, but good to have.
guess you missed that part about "not hand held"

yea,, $200 is about max for me, but i could do that when i recycle my beer cans
not hand held
You know, sometimes the .99 store is just too rich for some people's blood, so I was just making sure you knew there was a .98 store.

I wonder if there are any Obama-phone subsidies that we could apply towards your VHF rig? :dig:

FRS/GMRS are those little walkie-talkies you can get at Walmart (not sure the .99 store carries these).

Good deal!! Can't wait to be able to talk.

I'd suggest for others to get the NMOKHFCXTH vs the mount in this kit. This kit contains the regular version of the mount which is fine for a sheet metal roof (~20g on most vehicles), but if you want to attach it to anything much thicker than about 16g, good luck. This one I referenced will just give you more options, out to 1/2" thick.

Plus i never could get a cb to talk right even 20 ft from another rig.

Hope we can get even more interested in this.... Aaron has one of those chi-com handhelds and it works great. I think he had it delivered for less than 50 bucks.

These are pretty easy to hook up, but if you guys want to have a install party, we can certainly put something together. I know we have a super expert out here... whom I still need to have over for a few beers! STEVEN.... let's shoot for something after the holiday.

Thy usually do and leave them off so you can trim and route. Universal Radio or HRO will have what you need.

 my cable came with the end (separate in the package):dontknow:
search the packing again.

my question is: don't you need special crimpers for that end?
my other question is: my ham & cb are both mounted in my truggy,
should the antennas be a certain distance apart? :dontknow:
my other, other question is:  after everything is said and done,
do i need to go see desert dog for tuning on both radios?

Looks like a good tutorial.... I just skipped through it though.

Get them as far away from one another as you can.... at least 12"

SWR tuning is nice, but not necessary on the VHF. If Chris has a meter, by all means do it if he will give you some time.

The key is a good grounding plain on vhf .. If you don't, you'll have power feed back to the radio ..
My neighbor has checked mine .. Need a better grounding plain .. But it works better than the cb already

You are lucky with your Juggy Roger. You have a metal cab with a metal roof = better ground plane than any Jeep Wrangler will ever have. Mount the antenna right in the middle of your roof. Jeeps and some tube buggies have the biggest problem with this.

WTF? JUGGY? :thefinger:

the center of my roof is very do-able (dead center of my infectious sticker) :Thumb: but i'll have to move my cb antenna to new location.

 maybe to the very back, then i'll stick a flag on it for UTAH
