1951 CJ3A

Postby btowntaz » February 11th, 2015, 9:28 am

My Dads next door neighbor Jen, got her Grandfathers 1951 Willys CJ3A towed to her house. Hasn't ran for about 10 years. Her brother worked on it a few years ago, but couldn't get it running. He added a new battery and carburetor, but couldn't get it to turn over.

So we worked out a deal with Jen, we work on her Jeep and she gives us beer. :drinks:

Dad was able to figure out why the Jeep wouldn't run. 12 volt battery on a 6volt system. Gas tank was rusted out, so now it has a 1 gallon temporary tank. Got her to fire and run. Transmission, clutch, 4 wheel drive all work. Dad got all the wheel bearings and brakes replaced.

Continuing on body work. Dad had to have surgery to have cancer removed from bottom lip and jaw. He is going to take a break for awhile. Will keep photos updated as we go.

Jen did the prep work for the gas tank install this weekend. She plans to have the tub rhino lined in the future. Just wanted to get something under the tank before we put it in. Seats and rims are heading in to get fixed up. Dad had another surgery on Wednesday, but is still wanting to work on the Jeep. There is just no stopping him.

Oh yes, certified money pit it is.

Got the tank installed, replaced battery with a 6volt, changed coil to 6 volt, replaced battery wires, and got rims back from shop.

Just saw the Montana Plate....that explains the rust.

That Magnesium Chloride is HELL on cars. I have seen that shit eat through chrome in a day.

The tub floor rusted completely through in several places. Her Grandpa replaced it with some thick steel plate and did a nice job installing it.

Well the fuel pump went out. Only 2 bolts to replace, how hard could it be?? One of the hardest things we have done so far! Replaced an oil line that ran behind the fuel pump while we had it out.

Other than being a pain in the ASS to install, it fired right up. No issues to date, but it doesn't drive much either.
