Barrett Lake Trail is close to the Rubicon, maybe 1/2 hr drive from Ice House Resort. It's in to the lake and then back out, and is the perfect trail to add to a longer Rubicon trip if you have vacation time. Can be an overnight trip, camp at the lake, or could even be an in and out if someone didn't have the extra day. Also, if you don't mind not seeing Lake Tahoe, you can run the 'Con and camp at Buck Island Lake, the next day drive up Cadillac Hill to the overlook and then back to camp, then go back out to Loon Lake and trailers (for those who tow) and you can run in to Barret Lake the same day, unless there are major breakdowns. It can be nicer to drive the trail backwards rather than the long drive out to Tahoe and around. But, if you're looking to do it on a long weekend then running another trail is out unless you want to just wheel hard every day.
Of course, I always prefer at least one lay day for hiking, swimming and chilling in camp, but that's me. Barrett Lake Trail, however, is the last trail to open, kind of like Dusy, and on a heavy snow year might not open at all, so it would be virtually impossible to plan to run it if you went in June. Also, June and early July isn't good for Fordyce since the water levels are still high, mid-July and later for the best chance to run Fordyce. We've also quit running Fordyce to the end and then around through Truckee, which is a pretty long drive, so we run it up and back instead. Gets you more wheeling and time on the trail.
