Diagnostic Help

1987 XJ, ok it was running fine untill I decided to go play in the water.
Now it is running like shit, I noticed steem comming from under the cab at a closer look the cat was glowing red. I figuerd it was pluged up so I cut it out. Did not help. I spits and sputters when under a load and has no power, its won't even spin a tire in the mud in low. I think I killed it

Is it possible that the motor half way hydro-locked and bent or broke a valve?
There is almost 200k miles on her, so my next question is, has anyone ever rebuilt an I-6 4.0? any tips and tricks well help.

is there any water or signs of it in the intake? is the air filter wet?

did you check the distributor cap and clean the water out of it?

start there, after that do a compression check on the engine and a leakdown.

No signs of water in the distributor or in the intake.
Is there anyone out there that has a compression guage if so would you be willing to swing by and help a brother out, I got beer and food.

Is it possable that when the hot cat hit the cold water it disslodged the guts and created to much back pressure and something gave?

Vacum Leak. Tha twill cause exhaust to glow red. Start engine and spay starting fluid around vacum ports and intake. If the idle changes, you have found your leak.
