Looks like we may have to alter our plans a little bit.

The Land Cruisers moved their event to the same days as our run. 225 land cruisers, and they reserved all the spots at the springs (where we were going to camp). This is THE slowest run of the year, much worse than the Jambos, and is a cluster fock of stuck/broken rigs. At least 5 clubs, JKO, and SoCal Jeeps also moved their runs to these dates (before the LCs did). If we are not on the trail at the butt-crack of dawn, before the LCs on 33s start, we will be sitting on Big Sluice in the dark. Also running out Cadillac on Sunday is going to be a parking lot - Id plan on reserving a hotel in Tahoe now cause its going to be late when we hit pavement on the last day. Since we can't camp/fish/swim at the springs, and ideas for alternative camp sites?

2011 rubicon run

Postby casaintsfan » June 23rd, 2011, 1:14 am

If they have the springs reserved then it's prolly not the slabs where we camped at last year, it's prolly the area just before that. But with that many rigs they will prolly have over flow camping on the slabs. This really sucks, if you guys have any ideas please post up so we can figure out what we are going to do.

They are starting and leaving on the same days as us, along with several other big groups.

I'm with this line of thinking. There is no way we are going to get a group camp site if we leave after the sun comes up, plus who doesn't love some night action? Same with hitting Cadillac. We need to be mobile before 5:00am if we want to camp together. It sucks for the first timers that want to take in the sights of the trail and those that want to kick back and take it slow take some film, but its the only way this is going to happen. I think a 4am start is prudent. Hopefully this puts us past big sluice before the mad-house happens and the rock stacking begins. I'm already hearing that the trail is very rough right now.

Wow. That kind of kills the CON. Really, the beauty of the place trumps the wheeling anyday.

An alternate campsite would be at Spider. The slab next to the trail is huge, but you get to listen to the party all night as this is where the cool kids go to play in the dark. The slab keeps the bugs down too. Or really..... there will be plenty of options on the side of most of the trail. The Springs are over rated, this is no biggie.

IMO, camping at the granite slabs kind of sucks: Madhouse all night, no water to swim and fish near camp, no shade in most places, and the really sucky part is the LONG run out on the last day - which will put us behind the traffic jam no matter how early we started. There are some big camp sites past the springs (after the creek crossing), but that is a marshy area and really bug infested. I didn't get bit one time at the springs last year (fast moving water), the mosquito attacks happened while driving through the stagnant mud pits on the trail!

It sucks no matter how you look at it, but still better than going to work :Thumb:

How much of a problem would it be to leave one day early? I was hoping to take in the sights, sounds stressfull to have to race around keeping ahead of the other guys.

If we early enough on Thursday we could go straight to the trail and run to buck island and camp out Thursday night there then get an early start on Friday and head to the springs and still camp out 2 nights there. The key is get an early start. Then we got the few that are towing their rigs, they would have to leave even earlier or the night before to drop off their tow rigs and meet us at the trailhead.
This is getting crazy

2011 rubicon run

Postby casaintsfan » June 23rd, 2011, 10:48 am

It's gotta be a group decision, I personally would love to just cruise through and take in all the beauty of the rubicon and let all the 1st timers enjoy all that the rubicon has to offer.

Please post up your thoughts everyone, we still have time to make changes if we have to.

No no... you missed my spot. I am talking the slab between The Box and Spider. Spider is there for fishing, swimming, washing, etc.. and you get the benefit of the slab to camp on (read: hard, stable ground). There is little shade here (bring a tarp), lots of all night partying (bring sleeping pills), fewer bugs (yea!!), and it's the spot we will be extracting your ass out of for half a day anyhow. 40s and COs... you *will* be running the box! :stirpot:

Last year we camped one night at The Box and one at The Springs. Worked out well and we can find something near the springs since it will be so jacked up.
Please post up your thoughts everyone, we still have time to make changes if we have to.
I vote to just run the trail and camp where we decide to stop for the day. Wake up, pack up, repeat. This is something that we should not worry about. The only downside is possibly getting behind that LR clusterfuck, but then again, we'll have a Toy or two making us look like clusterfuckers too. :thefinger:

I think we should just start early on Friday and see what happens. As long as we hit the trail before the LCs and make big sluice before they do, we should be fine. Leaving between 5:30-6:00 still lets us take in the sights during the day with enough light to film, and puts us about an hour or more ahead of the circus. Its going to be REALLY important to bug out early on Sunday though. Remember Cadillac last year (waiting for hours) - image that x 20!

Im down for whatever. I can get my relax on with an ice cold margarita at the Black Jack tables Sunday night :yup:
