IMO, camping at the granite slabs kind of sucks: Madhouse all night, no water to swim and fish near camp, no shade in most places, and the really sucky part is the LONG run out on the last day - which will put us behind the traffic jam no matter how early we started. There are some big camp sites past the springs (after the creek crossing), but that is a marshy area and really bug infested. I didn't get bit one time at the springs last year (fast moving water), the mosquito attacks happened while driving through the stagnant mud pits on the trail!
No no... you missed my spot. I am talking the slab between The Box and Spider. Spider is there for fishing, swimming, washing, etc.. and you get the benefit of the slab to camp on (read: hard, stable ground). There is little shade here (bring a tarp), lots of all night partying (bring sleeping pills), fewer bugs (yea!!), and it's the spot we will be extracting your ass out of for half a day anyhow. 40s and COs... you *will* be running the box! :stirpot:
Last year we camped one night at The Box and one at The Springs. Worked out well and we can find something near the springs since it will be so jacked up.
Please post up your thoughts everyone, we still have time to make changes if we have to.
I vote to just run the trail and camp where we decide to stop for the day. Wake up, pack up, repeat. This is something that we should not worry about. The only downside is possibly getting behind that LR clusterfuck, but then again, we'll have a Toy or two making us look like clusterfuckers too.
