You really buy that Pink JK Unlimited?

As for CB, 4WP has the handheld one, that you could pass back and forth between Jeeps. Its like $99 bucks but you can carry it with you when you dismount, it doesn't require any permanent install and is probably about the same price as buying a CB, firestick, cable and mounts.

Just a thought.

2006 Yamaha Rhino 660 on 28" BajaCross, with winch.
2008 Dodge Ram 2500 6.7 CTD leveled with 20's and 35's.
Some boom toys here and there too.

I went to Jericho and they hooked me up. I would spend the extra money for a nicer hard mount. Lots more range sending and receiving.

Jericho can be pretty pricey, if you want a good quality CB at a decent price get a cobra 29. Seen them for about $80 at different truck stops. They also carry the antennas & cables too. The only problem with the cobra 29 is the size but a good quality unit.

The some of the Uniden models are pretty small (510/520), as is the Cobra 19. These should all be under 50, probably closer to 35, but you'll need to add an antenna and cables.

But CB sucks! Go HAM! You can get a small Chinese handheld single band that will do race freqs for under 50. No need for anything else.

Can you communicate with 97% of the club that only have CB's with a HAM? If so then that may be the way to go.

Even radio shack has some CB's and accessories, there's one right there by your work Justin.

Justin, I like full featured CBs like the Cobra 29, but I don't think its necessary for Francis.

I would go with the Uniden Pro 520, it the classic compact CB with good features, good range, and holds up extremely well in dusty environments (dust kills most cheap CBs). I probably see more Uniden 510/520s in Jeeps than any other radio. The Unidens are also easy to peak and tune and perform well with that mod. Buy quality = buy once/install once.

Just stay away from: a) Hand-helds, b) the Cobra 75.

If you need help installing it, just ask. I know all the tricks of CB installation on the JK.

In the year I have had my HAM, I have used it once - to listen to the race freq at King of Hammers, but my CB gets used every couple weeks. Even when I wheel with the Trailblazers, who supposedly are HAM, everyone uses the CB. When I ran in JV with the VV4Wheelers, who are also supposedly HAM, once again everyone used CB. Some small groups of like-minded people do use HAM a lot (like the URF guys). I think its a nice thing to have in an emergency, but it will hardly ever get used on Jeep runs.

Is there an issue with the cobra 75? It is what I have so that I can disconnect and lock it in the console when not in use. i know sound sucks so I got an external speaker for it. Anything else I need to know about it so can pick up something different if need be?

Dude I have a midland 75-822 that's a handheld/hard mount and everyone says I come in crystal clear... All cb's will be a standard wattage, what it really comes down to is quality of cable and height of antenna, if your antenna is blocked mostly by the vehicle then on the people behind you will hear you better, but if your cb is above your rig you will have better range, now with that being said... Alot of the trails I go on have low slung trees to catch antennas... So I sacrificed overall distance and mounted mine lower. But I can still hear everyone great on the trail... And that's comin from a handheld hard mounted... Think I paid like $60 off amazon...

The Cobra 75 is the worst quality CB you can own. I have never seen one last more than a year in a Jeep that gets wheeled frequently. The one in my JK lasted for 6 months, the one in Bigfoot's Jeep lasted about 4 months, and I don't think Brad's lasted a year. About 30 of us on JKO bought them as a group buy a couple years ago (because CB mounting in a JK is a bitch) and no one is using theirs today. Dust kills them FAST. And don't believe that that all CBs transmit the maximum, this has been tested and many actually transmit far less than the maximum. The 75 has horrible range, almost as bad as a handheld. The 75 also has no features for tuning, so they sound pretty shitty and often need to be squelched way down, which kills performance. I tried to tune 3 of them and could not get anywhere close to acceptable (for me). If you are on a budget or don't have the space for a full-featured CB, just get the Uniden 510/520, have it peaked by Jericho, and enjoy many trouble-free years of CB use. Its easy to set up a CB so it is easily unplugged and removed when not in use, or you can spend $$ and get one of those Tuffy CB boxes.

Getting a CB that can be peaked is the way to go. All CB's are set to put out a max of 4 watts. If it can be peaked you can get more than that, how much depends on the unit.

My Cobra 29 is putting out quite a bit more and coupled with my 6' antenna I can transmit and receive quite a bit further than most.

With that tall of an antenna I do hit on a lot of things, but it has held up and is not really a problem and the extended range is worth it.

I'll go against the grain..... as many of you know, I hate CB.

I wish I could convince you guys to go FM.... it is SOOOOOOOOOO much better. Even those cheapo FRS radios are better than AM, a bump up to HAM is not much more cash.

The only downside I see, is that many have already invested in old, tired, not all that great tech and this would be a new, somewhat unnecessary cost.

I wish there were options for a CB/HAM all in one. I know of one that might do it, but that guy is near 900.00 !?!?!

I have a CB in the XJ, and a HAM in the buggy. In the buggy, no one uses CB, when I'm in the XJ everyone usually uses CB. Since HAM/VHF is so reasonable, and so much more usable, I'm sure there will be a gradual switch over time, but not now.

And If my buggy was fixed, Chris would be using his HAM more often.....

Eric, drive around the corner some time and pay me a visit. I have a CB and antenna I can give you, then you can just take it over to Jericho and wait 15 minutes while he peaks and tunes it, and you will be ready to go on the cheap. Ill help you install it and do an SWR tune on your antenna. I owe you big time!
